@inkorrupt@dresden.network mastodon.social is a bloated instance. I agree with that. But that doesn't mean you should accuse the people who work on Mastodon itself of "fxxking up the spirit of federation". Presumably your instance uses their work too. You can support a decentralised fediverse without poo-pooing the efforts of other people. No one here is your enemy. You and the Mastodon team have similar goals. So probably you can express your disagreement without being combative. As for you 'paying too much'. What are you talking about? You don't seem to be the admin of your instance, so probably you aren't paying directly for the server upkeep. If you're talking about donations, and you think you're paying too much, you can simply choose to donate less. You don't really need to announce that to the world on an official post from the Mastodon team.

@pizzapatch@pdx.social A malware infected .exe can be deleted and replaced. An infected OS can be reinstalled - which is more work, but possible. Infected hardware can be particularly tricky - maybe the hardware needs to be replaced in some cases. So what do we do when the developers and their companies are the source of the malware...

@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us I've seen a version of this idea which, at the end, rotates the graph in 3D so that you see a vase-like shape curving outwards at a rapidly increasing rate. (1850s at the bottom, 2020s at the top.)

@lunarloony@dosgame.club @vga256@mastodon.tomodori.net Well, that's an interesting bit of strangeness. During that era, my home computer was an Atari ST - which had all that stuff built in rather than as an addon. Our first non-Atari computer had Windows 95, and I'm pretty sure the sound was handed by the motherboard rather than a dedicated sound card.

@maudenificent The US president says that they will 'bomb Iran back into the stone age with the most powerful military in history'. The US secretary of war says that they intend to kill all Iranians. And Penny Wong is now telling us that it is somehow unfair for Iran to be using their geographical advantages to fight back. Like, what does Wong expect in this situation? #auspol

"[...]but I want to reassure OpenTTD fans that we have not been “pressured” by Atari to make these changes."

This seems a bit weird. Are we to believe that the OpenTTD devs just happily chose to put someone else's paywall on the game?

Like, I can imagine why this might be considered a fair an reasonable outcome, but obviously it is not a win for OpenTTD. Its a decision that surely must be the result of implicit pressure. Right?

@Beldarak@mastodon.gamedev.place @AmyZenunim@unstable.systems Yeah. It's pretty messed up that in a capitalist system, the people who physically do the work tend to get the lowest pay while the people who own stuff (i.e. have 'capital') get the highest pay - often without actually doing anything at all.

@jwz@mastodon.social When I saw this for the first time, it was legitimately the funnest thing I'd seen in my life. I was bursting out laughing at random times for days whenever I thought about it. I'm not really sure exactly why I found it so funny. Probably a bit of luck being the right style at the right time. So although I don't feel anything like that any more, I do appreciate the reminder and remaster. (Although, at lot of the images in this 'slight remaster' have barely readable text. I wonder if it was always like that.)

@Gryficowa@mastodon.social No one here is being neutral to towards fascism. All that happened was that someone said "verifying an account is not the same as endorsing", and was attacked for it. It's neutrality towards a 3rd party's neutrality. Right? And now, all I'm doing here is trying to advocate for kindness, and you - you personally are saying that I'm a problem on the fediverse because of it. Reflect on that.

@Grutjes@mstdn.social Yeah I can see that. I understand where you are coming from. But this isn't Twitter. We generally talk in good faith. When you attack neutral positions with as much vigor as you attack hostile positions - it ... well, it's bad for a variety of reasons that I think you probably don't need me to explain.

@Grutjes@mstdn.social @kwarg@mathstodon.xyz Hang on a sec. Everyone here is against ICE - for obvious and serious reasons. And Bsky have chosen to not block ICE. But Grutjes, the person you responded to just now is a couple of steps removed from serious wrongdoing here. They didn't denounce bsky for failing to denounce ICE. I think it's fair that you disagree with them about that, but I don't think it deserves such blunt hostility.

@vtrlx@mastodon.social I hadn't heard about the middle click thing. That's good news to me. I've always found the feature weird and confusing; and somewhat unsettling when I accidentally paste something that I definitely did not clip and I really wish I hadn't pasted...

I will appreciate being able to turn it off, one day, in the distant future.

Also, I liked this:

Claims don’t even need to feel true let alone be true to gain traction—they just need to be rage-inducing to those angry toward that which they feel has wronged them.

@protonprivacy@mastodon.social I wouldn't expect any AI-focused company to move to homomorphic computing. They can profit from personal data - and so they're unlikely to spend extra resources to prevent themselves collecting it. And from the users' side, if told "it's encrypted"; it's still difficult to know who can and cannot decrypt it anyway. The whole thing is complex and opaque. So I'd say that local computation is the only near-term solution for that kind of privacy. And for the *other* privacy problem, we seem to have no solution at all. i.e. The problem of personal data being used for training regardless of the source or the person's wishes. Leading to things like this: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/07/ai-trains-on-kids-photos-even-when-parents-use-strict-privacy-settings/
