@drakonic in the wider context of "learning to draw" the attitude of "you must do still-life drawing, 3-point perspective, values and colour before you do manga-style" is absolutely pervasive and is what got me to quit visual art a decade ago when "well meaning" bystanders kept shitting on my progress pics because I wasn't drawing 300 boxes a day instead. I see this continuously given as "advice" to random people on reddit as well. the fact is, all that stuff is necessary, yes, but all of it can be done *later*. let people doodle if that's what they want to do. instilling an idea that you're "learning the wrong way" kills people's motivations. my first PCBs sucked ass and the very first one didn't even work. but I got better and better with each one. somehow, I did so without learning analogue impedance formulas from a textbook first.

shit advice like this frustrates me because it is not how most humans learn to do anything I didn't learn how to make my own PCBs by cracking open "The Art of Electronics" and reading it cover to cover. I did it by cribbing schematics off of other people so I could make LEDs blink.

@misty it got so bad that Jack basically swore off playing the rest of the chapters and the whole series in general. when it was obvious Kris != Chara he basically just dropped it on the spot because he didn't care about "the lore" anymore. I honestly feel like the whole Gaster meta-sub-plot and Chara as a character may have gotten Toby a lot of fame and fortune but it has utterly destroyed his storytelling and art itself. it feels like barely anyone really even cares about his characters or story anymore, they're just window dressing to this secret fucked up meta-mystery/hype moments and aura. it doesn't feel like that's what he wanted and he's even made fun of it in the games themselves but it's way beyond his control now.

it keeps coming back to my arch nemesis: aesthetics. Deltarune and Digital Circus rely so much on nostalgic aesthetics, lumped it with lore and mystery, that they feel ripe for the toxicity I describe. Celeste has a certain level of nostalgia but then quickly breaks from it. Disco Elysium goes full avante-garde with its presentation at the earliest convenience.

Disco Elysium and Celeste managed to figure this out in different ways. Disco Elysium keeps you entertained with absurdism and social intrigue which then breaks into existentialism, but requires only reading comprehension as a skill. Celeste keeps its scope personal but demands your full attention through gameplay.

either way, I'm learning a lot about what makes a story fall into this trap. there is a certain threshold of "accessibility" to the narrative that lends itself to turning the whole thing toxic. there is a fine "skill-based" line you have to walk to make your intentions known, allow the viewer to come up with their own thoughts on it, but also not have it devolve into a rancid mess.

I haven't seen the same toxicity out of something like Celeste, which is almost universally beloved as well. I don't think "mystery and lore" is necessary. it's almost like a crutch at a certain point; the "mystery box" style of storytelling. in contrast, even with all the problems the Touhou fandom has, the toxicity is almost antithetical to its "lore" - people go out of their way not to care.
