@defuneste @noamross @tylermorganwall dbt is a python package, but it builds as an independent tool, a capability that isn't really found in R and I can't decide if I think it should or not. Quarto branched out that way and it opened doors.

@noamross @defuneste @tylermorganwall this is one of the points I was trying to make in the Analysis section - I think dbt's scope ends there and expects an analyst to pick up the 'analysis ready' data in a separate project. {targets} can combine all the steps and keep building, but with the trade-off of maybe taking on too much responsibility. Hence my question of 'what is too big?'

@tylermorganwall I presumed you could, but good to hear it confirmed. One question I'm left with: at what scale would dbt make more sense than {targets}?

I've been looking into dbt for data engineering and wanted to flesh out what the similarities and differences were to just using {targets} - I learned lots about both of them!

I wrote up my findings in this post

Maybe I knew this at one point in the past, maybe not, but it just blew my mind (all over again, if I did)... 🤯

In a terminal, Ctrl+x Ctrl+e opens $EDITOR to edit the current command with whatever ergonomics you're more familiar with in that editor - amazing for long terminal commands.

I've been keeping an eye on this since I first heard about it, and it looks like it now works! duckdb has a dplyr extension which can be installed - use dplyr code to slice and dice data within a duckdb session.

A bit of a long shot, but in the spirit of #fedihire I'm on the lookout for opportunities to contribute to R tooling. If your org could use some help developing or productionising an R package or some prototype R code, managing data access via databases or APIs, or translating between languages, drop me a line and let's discuss. Worldwide timezones supported. My services are listed here: http://jcarroll.click/services and I'm available to start immediately.

@coolbutuseless I finally got to the end of it - longer than the vast majority of books I read, but greatly enjoyed. I first heard mention of 'programmer archaeologist' on a (deeply insightful) CoRecursive podcast episode https://corecursive.com/brian-kernighan-unix-bell-labs1/#:~:text=There%E2%80%99s%20a%20book%2C%20A%20Deepness%20in%20the%20Sky but it was a fleeting mention. Interesting to see 'weaponised autism' as a plot but it worked. Now I'll need to read A Fire Upon the Deep. 36 books into the year and plenty of year left, but an ever-growing to-read list now.

I don't usually track pages. It's certainly on target for much more than previous years Number of books finished: 2023: 24 2024: 16 2025: 30

@prophet@functional.cafe so reverse . reverse isn't necessarily optimised for a finite list? I did look a the dump myself but figured I was using it wrong because I saw the double reverse. I know a lot of APLs have optimisations like this, or "last" being equivalent to the first element of a reversed (linked) list

@prophet@functional.cafe ah, that makes sense - I was originally worried that I was shortcutting the result by assigning it to _ but now I see the same is true of an assigned but not-yet-evaluated value. Thank you! I'll update the post. I couldn't get a clear answer elsewhere but it sounds like you may know - are the rewrite rules like rev/rev/id and map/filter fusion generally implemented or are these purely up to the user to write/activate?
