Worked like a *champ* and blew the freaking minds of my colleagues. :-)

@ety@hive.institute @PurpleJillybeans@kind.social I know Phreaknet only because my buddy that’s so into it has a lot invested in it. You don’t need much at all to get connected and online - a small SBC (like a RPi) and a VOIP app on your phone will get you connected, from there you can expand. I started out with a VM running Asterisk connecting there, and now have a small collection of PBXs and VOIP gateways (modern, Ethernet connected stuff) but there’s no real limit to how old you can go. FWIW it’s probably much less “before” than you but this is before my time by more than a little bit as well. But still fascinated by it, anything “phone company” was a huge mysterious unknown when i was a kid and I hated not knowing the mystery. It’s just taking me this long to being able to figure out some of it. :) My challenge for this PBX is to get it connected to phreaknet and be able to dial in and out “real world” phone calls onto it. Honestly, that’s not that hard to do.

@ety@hive.institute @PurpleJillybeans@kind.social I am assisting a local friend (Atlanta) with recovering and restoring something like 14 switchboards and PBXs from a rural phone company in North Carolina. He’s a pro at it, I’m learning my way along, and will probably be posting stuff here on my projects. This is like generally mid-1950s WE 555/551 corded switchboards, smaller Automatic Electric and Stromberg-Carlson switchboards from local companies, and other related stuff. My friend has a couple of working switches as well as a large presence on Phreaknet, and I have some phone equipment here on Phreaknet as well. I’m taking one of the smaller switchboards on as a project, and my goal is to put it online and route calls through it here at the house. Part of my normal hobby (old IBM computers) involves old networking gear and old telecom gear as well, so there’s some crossover there too.
