@DeliaChristina@sfba.social thanks for the clarification - yeah I don't even care that much about data centers (compared to firing all the black women they can and stopping people and ICE gestapo and preventing solar power and stopping science and medicine) but it is a great example of citizens organizing and showing who ultimately has the power, so a good practice for people.

I had some multi disk albums that were arranged so that you could listen to the whole piece this way in the proper order (and proper order of long compositions is not solved universally for digital).

And the high scale system is complex enough that you only get reliability if top executives consistently value it year over year. Source: I worked at a place that was 5 9s for many years and a place that went from 2 1/2 nines to to about 4 1/2 nines over fifteen years or so. Someone responsible for reliability has to be able to say roll back to teams with bad code and it has to stick. Plus honest incident review and continuous improvement.

But asking them about code their group wrote will get the answer that it is terrible. But IME the problems are more often with conditions than code itself. A lot of times management won't pay for the right way, and a lot of times years of tech debt is hard to maintain, but quality is higher than the people say.

@pewnack@aus.social @NanoRaptor@bitbang.social Even global warming, while it was a fair degree of currency in the info market, many people keep thinking it "might be too late" as if stopping it at 3 meters of ocean rise is not different than stopping it at 10 or 70 meters of rise. But everyone is aware that in a group chat messages can be seen in a different order. But it is hard for me to perceive the overall group for sure. 2/2

@pewnack@aus.social @NanoRaptor@bitbang.social sure. Could be the predominant culture now. Not where I travel but that's sure not a large sample. I am Just thinking about explaining functional analysis "functions are really vectors" vs explaining the CAP theorem "if the network is down you don't know what happens on the other side" to non specialists. (Both of which I have done in the past few years). 1/2

@pewnack@aus.social @NanoRaptor@bitbang.social I agree with what you seem to believe; my small point was just I think people do not know as much about science as about computer technology. Science has less visibility than it ought to have. I live in a place where the miraculous mRNA technology is looking like not being used because people are too unaware of how wonderfully useful it is but phones are. And people spend more time worrying about the Car Play software than getting a low or no carbon transport option.

@pewnack@aus.social @NanoRaptor@bitbang.social local caches, and the difference being streaming and local data at a pretty intuitive level, due to all the city people wanting phones. Agreed the US is less educated than it ought (which I see as a cause for lack of support for proper units). I see computer science as a tiny subset of proper science, but many of the weird effects of comp Sci are in daily display in a way that gravity waves or quantum superposition or island evolution patterns are not. I could be wrong. 2/2

@pewnack@aus.social @NanoRaptor@bitbang.social my point was small: pretty sure one can squeeze off 50 mls of medicine and not really understand SI units and yet that most city kids around the world will understand networks, delayed replication, the idea of eventual consistency, 1/2

@pewnack@aus.social @NanoRaptor@bitbang.social I am all for science and certainly no one can get thru their morning without the fruits of knowledge, but at this time it is difficult to claim that computing is more niche than a solid understanding of SI units (mich less dimensional analysis).

@wearenew_public @anneapplebaum between federated tech, like mastodon, email, and web pages, and open source software, like Linux and LibreOffice, the biggest problem with ditching fascist controlled companies is the giant cloud providers. Hardware is more scarce than software.

@n0kovo@infosec.exchange I like GCC but really how can anything exceed auto tools for yelling. I mean maybe last five years has been ok. But there are decades of missing the mark before that. (With git, also, you can blame the victim, oneself, for not understanding the semantics of immutable digraphs of content addressable stores).

@johentsch@hostux.social @jimbob@aus.social “why is it rewriting it in lisp?” lol. I used Claude code for a thing exploring the distribution of algebraic numbers using 128 bit floats and instructions from a later interaction would make it remove features requested in earlier iterations. Also, it was not good at maintaining its own code. Still, it spit out ok PNG files without me having to learn some PNG libraries. But it couldn’t figure out a way not to run out of memories with algebraic numbers of large heights.

@yaxu@post.lurk.org @henryseg@mathstodon.xyz sure, I wasn't arguing against banning it. The accessibility alone is a serious flaw (even not being able to reflow with different page dimensions is a pain). But it is more temporally safe than most old formats. I have downloaded very old Tex and rerun it, and have a 17 year old presentation I periodically regenerate. Nothing too fancy tho.

@yaxu@post.lurk.org @henryseg@mathstodon.xyz the chief virtue of LaTeX is that it is portable across time. In forty years it will still be a known format. Papers from 1985 in LaTex are still easy to read and edit; traffic/eqn, PageMaker, word 1.0, etc. or so on are not, in general.

@MHowell@mas.to @admin@mastodon.brk.io @robpike@hachyderm.io we have gay marriage, supercomputers every where, Wikipedia and arxiv and mathoverflow and less child sexual abuse and less racist violence (thanks cell phones) and the Catholic Church is trying to apologize for that and less crime and while the labor/capital balance needs adjusting and the carbon burn needs to stop, and racists need to again be shamed, we are mostly done with the brutal violence of the 1950s racists, country invasions, and coups. Not that I am not mad.
