Merry Christmas from Eigg with a picture taken from the video of Eigg Primary School's 2011 panto Aladdin, which we watched along with Muppets Christmas Carol on Friday. The three sibling ferry workers here are all now grown up but home on Eigg for Christmas. In 2011 year there were ten children in the primary school & nursery. Today there are eleven = lots of very excited Christmas households this morning.

Sweeney's Bothy on Eigg has hosted 100s of artists and creative folk since it opened in 2014. From visual artists to poets, filmmakers to ceramicists. Run by the Bothy Project, the next residency is for contemporary music composers.

The bothy is an incredible space to make work from - warm, comfortable and in an inspiring setting. If you're a composer, or know someone who is, please do share this link with them - it's a truly magical opportunity.

On Friday evening, Santa came to Eigg! The lights were dimmed, as he marched in to the sound of Jingle Bells on the bagpipes before inviting each excited child up for their present. Then our community Christmas meal, with lots of donated and very tasty dishes. Later, the traditional mountain of washing up, drams, stories, a fire outside and happiness. Children played, adults laughed. The hall was decked with greenery, lights, and a Christmas tree decorated by the Singing Group, singing!

Eigg is one of the four Small Isles. On the tiny neighbouring Isle of Muck The Little Red Boat business was expanding. A new seafood kitchen to cook, prepare and sell their catch from was almost complete when a storm totally destroyed their boat. The impact on skipper Sandy and his young family was devastating. They're now trying to buy a new boat. If you can help with ££ or boosts, everyone in our small part of the world would be very grateful.

@SoryahhTale@mastodon.social no eggs involved 🙂 The Isle of Eigg is the anglicised version of the Eilean Eige; the “island of the notch”. Eag (genitive Eige) meaning notch or wedge which in Gaelic refers to the distinctive shape of An Sgùrr on the skyline.

@NickyW@mastodon.me.uk cheers, here's a few answers... Medical care - the Small Isles Medical Practice is based on Eigg. GPs from Skye come once a week to Eigg and less often to the other islands. In emergencies the Coastguard, RNLI, & Ambulance service work together to evacuate folk by helicopter or lifeboat if required. Food - we have a great shop! Electricity & batteries? @lizzyfa@mastodonapp.uk Hi there over 10,000 people made a donation to the purchase of the island, all individuals. The only public funding received was a grant of £17k to support a project officer after purchase, We are hugely grateful to each and everyone of those 10,000 people. No crowdfunding platforms or paypal then. Each donation or pledge was posted to Eigg (SACKS of mail)... the latter of which had to then be collected once the sale had gone through. Admin super-heroes + generous supporters = history

To introduce ourselves... The Isle of Eigg was one of Scotland's first community buyouts when in June 1997 its 65 inhabitants raised £1.5m to buy the island. Since then the Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust has owned and managed Eigg on behalf of its residents and the world! Eigg's population is now around 115.
