home county in southern california has placed a state of emergency and 50,000+ evacuation for immanent failure of a toxic chemical tank (containing methyl methacrylate) used in the production of cockpit components, passenger car windows, etc..

currently, the only option is just to blast the tank with (I couldn't find how much) tons of water to cool it, but recent measurements indicate the internal temperature of the tank is still rising.

a blast from the 34,000-gallon tank will cause some significant portion of industrial structures to flatten, an unknown mixture of highly flammable chemicals at the plant, and an entire city (known as "the cultural capital of the Vietnamese diaspora" and the second largest Vietnamese population in the U.S.) will lose breathable air immediately. experts claim this is on a similar scale to the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio - another area quickly ruined by industrial neglect, papered over by lobbies and federal apologists, and forgotten even quicker.

not to conflate the health concerns due to very different types of exposure (both of which I know very little about), but Chernobyl had just 12,500 residents at the time of the event, and the city in question is just 13 miles from one of the country's largest theme park establishments which reported over 47,000 daily visitors in 2024 and intends to continue operating, and just 29 miles from L.A. (city is home to 3.8m, county is 9.6m) - both of which in the path of the northern winds predicted to carry the airborne toxic elements.

I don't have much of a commentary, other than to observe: it's quite perplexing to me that besides the plea by local officials to evacuate the area, they mostly seem to be uncertain on how to contain a situation of this scale, the local fire chief "calling people all over the state and the country [for ideas on] how we can safely go in there and depressurize a pressurized tank" - which seems to me to not only be a basic misunderstanding of physics but also a big shrug regarding the environmental safety contingency plans to contain the emergencies stemming from the scale of production that has spread to every corner of the world. I appreciate the local fire departments work to maintain public safety, but given the relative lack of state and federal support - "we need ideas" is not just an insult to the people effected, but also a pretty explicit indication that harm to millions of citizens and potential casualty to locals is a mere externality of continuing to make fiberglass products for Boeing, etc..

stupid. people will be unhoused and die because urban planners in the '50s didn't account for real estate developers in the '60s failing to account for the interests of manufacturing developments in the '70s, driving down the housing market in the '80s, creating crowding in the '90s, combined with under-regulated industry in the '00s, and aging equipment in the '10s. now, we're here, and the only thing we can think of is "we need ideas". what a joke.

why is there such a lack of standalone portable innofader units on the new or used market?

Raiden is long gone, JDD2XR is almost non-existant, I haven’t see a Stokyo Kutter on the market in over a year. I can literally only find a single used unit on the market at the moment. Weird.
