The people sleeping on the street are not the ones to be afraid of. *I only know of it because the survivor was a friend **an existent friend, not an “asking for a friend”-type friend

@WhatTheChel@mas.to @JustFrank@mas.to I live in Seattle, in subsidized housing which serves a lot of people coming out of homelessness &/or struggling with addiction and other mental health problems.
Disturbances? Yeah, every so often someone stands out in the parking lot & yells for a while. Crime? If you habitually leave your car doors unlocked, someone probably might steal stuff from inside.
Safety? When I take the garbage out at 2 am, I am sometimes confronted by a small brown bunny rabbit. (#RunAway !)

The Wikipedia article says they get about 700 applications/year & approve an average of zero. So I guess they’re not actually running a racket where, once you’ve finished building your house, they collude in making life there so intolerable you abandon your investment.
(Either that, or they’re running that racket really badly. 😜)

@swisslet@mas.to @essjax@essjax.com The settlement offer is interesting. Because you don’t have to buy your land, you don’t get to sell it if you decide to leave the island.
But you are expected to build a house on that land. The PI gov’t will make you an interest free construction loan; but again: if you leave, the debt comes with you while the house stays on the island.
Could be a pretty slick racket if more (read:any) people were interested in moving there.

So, when I hear it, I never know what to feel until its context is made clear.

It’s easy to describe things people have seen before (“Bird perched on the back of a sheep out in a sunny pasture. Bird is black, sheep is white, grass is green, sky is blue”). But no one’s seen a 3D Venn diagram before, so they don’t know how to expect one to look.
