Even outside of jams dedicated lanes always allow more reliable service and shorter commute routes. There's a hundred very direct correlations between dedicated bus lanes and bus passenger comfort.

While CoMaps always renders everything in buttery smooth 120Hz and zero buffering, others choke and buffer and slow down to a crawl for each new tile. If they ever do an online-mode, I hope it'll be an opt-in setting and that they don't de-prioritize their amazing and unique offline perf.

A budget of ~250-300€ is plenty. Best to try to get something from gen 8 onwards, since the older ones don't have many crucial hardware security features.

@Mr0 You're welcome, thank you for being open to this information :) And yeah, I actually did find a new favorite, just a few days ago. Basically I was researching backdoors in embedded hardware, which reminded me of Intel ME / AMD PSP, which reminded me of coreboot, an open source firmware (UEFI layer), as that can sometimes be used to mitigate some of the aforementioned backdoors. I researched a bit and it looks like System76 is a major contributor to coreboot, and they do ship some systems with it out of the box. They also seem to have good spare part availability, even if not as nicely visible and designed as Framework. Also, they haven't promoted any nazis to my knowledge, so there's that xD

@Mr0 @jdw Well they did donate money/hardware to both and did promote both on official channels, which I would say counts as supporting. I know the decision was most likely entirely business motivated for them with little regards for anything else, but again, so was IBM's decision to sell and service computers for the NSDAP in the 40s. Not saying the severity is the same, but the reasoning behind and spirit of are. Especially given that there *are* companies who try to be ethical including on the topic of human rights and not supporting and normalizing fascism. For the record, tho, Framework was also my preferred brand and I really wanted to get a Framework 16, until I learned of all this. It took many people by surprise.

When concerns were raised by queer people to them, the CEO shrugged them off, talking about wanting a "big tent". What that has to do with *actively* promoting Nazis (and continuing to do so), though, I don't know. Also, their stuff isn't compatible with open source firmware such as coreboot.

@jdw I've recently been on a mission to switch to using as much open source software as possible, and found that most computer's UEFI firmware is actually a closed source insecure mess. There is an awesome FOSS alternative called coreboot, but not many support it. The two companies with the most notebooks shipping with coreboot out of the box are Star Labs and System76, between which System76 looks nicer imo. When I go through years old technical documentation of mine it's almost surprising to me how much I used lists, approximated em-dashes (double minus: --), emphasis, etc. Now I actively make my texts be more of a formless sludge, as otherwise it looks AI generated to people :,(

@jgilbert @nixCraft Can't believe you're the only one in the replies saying this. It's access to information that saves queer (and especially trans) people's lives. If I had access to the modern web when I was younger, I would've realized much sooner why I felt the way I did, and would've had a chance at a fulfilling life. But hey, why be an intelligent parent that makes their kid feel safe enough to talk to you about everything, thus shielding them from a lot of society's ills online and offline... if you can instead be a toxic surveillance helicopter parent, not leaving your kid any room for own self exploration. Queerness and independent thought need to be stomped out, after all.
