A solid #OttBike adventure with the kids today: 🚲 On the KZM, enjoying the wide space. 🚲 Behind Parliament, finally open again! 🚲 Made them haul their bikes across the locks. 🏊❌ Considered swimming at East Wharf but some floating garbage turned them off it. 🚲 Alexandra Bridge! 🏊🏊🏊 Swam at the history museum docks, had a blast. 🚲 Biked along the north shore for a bit, crossed back (Chaudiere to the Zibi park pathway with the MUP bridge behind the war museum) 🌭 Had lunch at Remic Rapids, there was a band playing in the park beside the patio 🎵 🚲 Biked home along the Ottawa River Pathway. 20+ km on their little legs (plus a good amount of swimming). Super impressed.

I had to go out past Greenbank today. I took a mix of side streets and the Pinecrest Creek MUP there, and then up Holly Acres to Watson Creek/Ottawa River MUPs.

That last stretch, especially from Carling to the parkway was overflowing. Once I could get on the open for bikes parkway, there was space for everyone.

While I love having the space, I hate that the NCC is sticking to bike mornings again this year.

At the library I picked up a "grab and go" bundle (4-5 books on a theme). The theme was "Books my 9 year old would like." All fun facts books.

Current status of my 9 year old: reading his way through punctuated with exclamations "whoa! Cool!"

The librarian who put this together knew their audience 😁

Ottawa River MUP Report: -Flooding is mostly west of Relic Rapids, around the Carleton Ave underpass (which is not itself flooded). There is space to go around on the grass but it's a decent amount of trail underwater. -Minor flooding east of Remic, but it looked about as high this afternoon as this morning. A bit of space to go around, but it wasn't completely covering the MUP. #OttBike #OttRun

#OttBike #OttRun Report -The Ottawa is rising. The New Orchard tunnel is flooded at the north end. I was on my little trucker and got wet feet, you might be ok on a normal adult sized bike. Detour up around to Richmond and then cross after the bridge and loop around if you want to avoid the water. -Dry all along the main MUPs west to at least the greenbelt trail turn off. -The detour around Watts Creek and Corkstown is a bit of a mess. Signage isn't clear but the road had no cars and that worked out. -Greenbelt trail is crossed by seasonal streams especially on the north end, but totally passable. -Rail trail west to Stittsville is fine. I hate the Kanata crossings but the city hates bikes so 🤷🏼‍♂️ That's as far as I went today. 50km round trip.

Another update from my run: -Mud lake loop is 99.9% snow and ice free and only minimally muddy. I imagine other similarly wooded areas are in like conditions. -Not many turkeys, they seem to have moved to other parts of town. #OttBike #OttRun

One note, the new underpass at Churchill was starting to flood yesterday afternoon. I *hate* that new active transportation infrastructure seems built to flood. I imagine the Cleary underpass, whenever it opens, will also have that issue.

-No longer any path-spanning snow or ice patches (on the main/through path, some side paths do have them still). -Commute is faster and less stressful being away from drivers, despite being ~15% longer. #OttBike

-Mostly clear but with patches of snow and ice of various sizes from the New Orchard to Churchill underpasses.

-After Churchill, where the pathway goes into a more forested area, it looked all snow covered, but I didn't go that far.

@Kaneda_runs @WTL I did crosscountry from elementary through high school (never competitively, though I made provincials as part of a team once!), so the "how to start" isn't my forte and I have those early lessons hammered in thoroughly enough to be intuitive. That said I've probably stopped running, and then restarted again, probably at least half a dozen of not a full dozen times in the intervening decades so the "getting back into it" is where I can help 😁 The advice is basically the same! Get out there, go slow, and find the pace where your brain does what it needs to to get you back out again. I usually hit that point around 3km in, then can go as long as I have time for.
