Maybe the should market the GST holiday / $250 cheques as "take the paycheque of a young, nearly homeless federal worker at Christmas".

@Auxonic the 90s recession was bad enough for many businesses that federal tax revenues were declining and federal debt-to-gdp was increasing strongly. There was some justification for reducing fed spending. But instead of slashing distributions to wealth, they attacked the PS to appease those who'd been drinking the conservative koolaid. Now the LPC is doing it, without any justification at all, when the context is that wealth is doing extremely well while people are suffering increasingly.

@Auxonic@mastodon.social I still remember a late 20's colleague crying at her desk after a phone call. We thought her fucking husband died.

But no, after a few minutes of generic consolation she was able to explain she'd finally received permanent status after being a term employee for 6 years.

This was around 1998, many bad times in the PS thanks to Paul Martin and Jean Chretien's cuts in 1995. The economy had been a bit bad in the 90s, both for wealth and for people.

@ottaross@mastodon.social in hindsight, maybe Singh could've put electoral reform as the keystone of the supply arrangement, and waited on national childcare, pharmacare, and dental. It would be the end of the threat of CPC/LPC majorities for quite a while.
