Finally found spoons for the annual story compilation. Almost done.
✅ Collate and edit collected stories
✅ Make cover image
✅ Write preface/aftertexts
✅ Fix PDF accessibility issues

Still to do:
⬜ Fix epub accessibility issues

I can understand men not wanting to appear "womanly".

It's not a concern I have any more, but I grew up in an environment where it was the norm.

But I can't understand men who are so afraid of appearing feminine that they give up on being human.

It's human to love, laugh, sing, and enjoy sweets.

My employer's pay gap survey (done by an independent auditing company) has been presented, and we have a role-adjusted gender pay gap of -1.9%, meaning in the same role women tend to be paid slightly more.

Also, we're ranked in the top five of attractive-to-women tech employers in Sweden.

I haven't been with this company long, but it's nice to see.

I recently bought a book[1] about the 2020 C++ standard, and have been dipping into it the last few days.

(There is a 2023 standard out too, and another is planned for this year, but I'll have to get up to date with 20 first. Plus, 20 is said to be a major upgrade, with 23 and 26 being more incremental, like 14 and 17 were over the more revolutionary 11.)

Makes me want to revisit some old utility classes I've released over the years, to bring them up to a modern standard, or find out if a similar functionality has made it into the standard.

Looking at my largely defunct programming blog[2], I see I wrote a fair few articles in the 2010-12 period, and then slowed down drastically. There are a few later articles (and some I realise are missing, which I only published on CodeProject, a once thriving community that got eaten and killed by AI) but it seems I mostly stopped writing about programming around the time I started to write microfiction.

Apparently there's only so much writing that can be squeezed out of me.

Anyway, pretty much exactly twenty years ago I wrote a couple of articles for CVu, about a generic node which could act as root, branch, or leaf, and was a generic container. A third and final article in that series was lost in a network failure and employer change, and it's been nagging me ever since.

So I'm tempted to finally get some closure by bringing that code up to modern standards, using the new language features, and do a write-up of it. I thought it was quite nifty back then, so I'm curious to see if I still think it is.

And also put all that code on CodeBerg.

And move the articles to a proper WP installation - I have had the domain for ages but never got around to it.

*Eyes long list of projects I'd like to do*

One of these days...

@PeterSommerlad None at all - this is all Yocto and BitBake. There's a wide mix of C++ experience in the team from "Up to date to 17" to "No Oop whatsoever", but in the group we have an expert who'll help bring us all up to speed.

Had Thursday and Friday off last week so hadn't seen the Friday afternoon email where I'm booked in to a week-long training course this week - Designing embedded systems with Yocto BitBake.

When I first joined the Swedish team at my previous company, I asked for this training, since they had all done it previously, but it never happened in my 4.5 years there, despite me asking for it at least once per year.

Now, the team I'm in with my new employer is about to start the same journey, of moving from C/RTOS to C++/Linux, and since I'm here at the start I'll finally get that training.

A bit more notice would have been nice though. :-)

A question that was raised:

Are James Cameron's Avatar films animated films with some live action scenes?

As in, would they qualify for the Best Animated film Oscar?

Went for a walk in the spring sunshine (and, alas, wind). Headed to Zimmerman's backe, a hill and small nature reserve on the north side of town. It rises 25 meters above the surrounding landscape, and is tired by a large, line elm.

In winter, if there's snow - and we had a lot of snow this year, from the beginning of January to the end of February - it's a great sledding slope, as evidenced by this left-behind, broken sled.

@cstross@wandering.shop When my SO and I moved from Sweden to England at the turn of the millennium, we brought our olds manual car over, on the principle that if we were familiar with the controls we'd only have to learn to drive on the left side (and roundabouts!) to start with. When we replaced it with one that had the driver on the right side, we got an automatic, as my SO is too right-handed to shift gears with her left hand. After that we only had automatics in England. Now that we've moved back to Sweden, we've bought a manual car again. Took a bit of practice but we've both got the muscle memory back now. I'm sure those who've automated as much as possible could learn to drive without those features again. What scares me is that they don't think they can.

@samir@mastodon.functional.computer My perspective is skewed by having mostly worked on embedded systems the last 30 years. Things like roadside weather monitoring, cell culture growth and analysis systems for medical research, and printers for date markings on eggs. I'm used to working on things that by and large are both useful and arguably beneficial. On the other hand, I did spend a couple of years working for a bank before going back to the embedded world...
