@TechTangents@dialup.space The thing which always strikes me about stuff like this is that in the past any retailer which sold garbage like this to customers would suffer so much reputational damage that if they didn't fix it immediately they'd be at risk of going out of business. Imagine if a local bookshop had shelves that were mostly filled with books like this. But Amazon knows that it's "too big to fail" and people are now conditioned to just sighing and tolerating stuff like this and hoping for a refund. The odour of cynicism that pervades this whole chain from fake book maker to fake book retailer is choking an entire industry.

August Wöginger, head of the ÖVP faction in parliament, has just been found guilty of abuse of public office after intervening to ensure that a (male) party colleague who it was felt "was owed a favour" was awarded a senior job in a regional tax office over the obvious and most qualified internal candidate (who just happens to be a woman).

His party have loyally stood by him up until now - "innocent until proven guilty" and all that - and have strongly resisted calls for him to resign. I wonder if they'll keep standing by him now he's received a 7 month suspended sentence and a large fine?

I mean, they might. The standard that's expected here of political parties when their members and officers get caught breaking the law is, oddly, much lower than it is in the UK. Probably small-country culture - so much in Austrian politics, especially in the "old" parties, is tied to patronage and making the right friends in order to advance your career that this kind of thing is inevitable.

[note: the sentence and verdict does not have legal effect until any appeals that either party might choose to make are exhausted.]

Not just that, but as many of DB Fernverkehr's woes are infrastructure related rather than, as it were, their own fault there's no guarantee that other operators will fare any better. They'd have a better chance of making the network more reliable overall if they cut slots completely rather than simply reassigning them to another operator which, among other things, won't have the advantage of being able to scrounge up a replacement trainset that isn't sitting in a siding hundreds of kilometres away.

Recently (after the Hungarian elections) these unattributed posters started appearing on sites across Vienna. This one's at our local tram stop.

It's now been discovered who was responsible for them, and the answer is: the ÖVP. Yep, the same party which willingly went into coalition with the FPÖ and nearly went into coalition with them again after the last election. Of course they aren't doing this because they have a genuine concern for the future of liberal democracy and want to resist any movements to autocracy. They're doing it because the FPÖ represent a serious electoral threat to the ÖVP for the same reason that Reform represents a serious electoral threat to the Tories - they're crap and uninspiring enough that even with some gentle cosying up to the far right they're still losing votes.

The whole "marionette with strings held by an invisible hand" imagery is.. yeah, I know what they're getting at there.
