I've not personally noticed any cesspittyness or defederation or anything negative about it at all (aside from the odd idiot, but, hey, it's social media, whaddya expect? 🙃)

I keep telling people put off by the "complexity" of Mastodon: joining isn't complicated - just sign up for mastodon.social. Move if you really want to once you've got into it. Simple.

Bit unusual for Microsoft of all companies. Did someone mention them on Slashdot or something?

I find here on fedi, following the #dataviz tag is worthwhile. I'm not sure people really use hashtags on Bluesky, and I don't think you can follow them, and there's no algorithm to speak of, so I find following hashtags on Mastodon to be most satisfactory way to dip into the community. Just open the tag page on your server and tap/click follow:

@sarajw@front-end.social also btw, as a boy coming of age in the early 90s, my head is stuck with the maximal-minimalist irony of Designers Republic and the grungy exotic chaos of Ray Gun as being the unassailable peak of shit hot style. Few things blew my mind as much as hearing Nirvana for the first time or playing (and seeing and hearing) Wipeout on the first PlayStation. Apart from a few exceptions, I find generic minimalism a bit dull, if I'm honest.

Post 90s (possibly accelerated in pop culture by Jony Ive's Rams and Bauhaus inspired design at Apple) minimalism has become associated with style, artistry, and luxury, with noisy design the antithesis of that. Those text heavy covers look like cheap mags on the rack at a supermarket. Presumably Vogue has sought to align itself with the aesthetic trends and fashions of this (digital) era.

#TIL if you do a web search in #DuckDuckGo then click on the favicon of a search result (not the URL next to the favicon; it's got to be the icon), then DDG will do a site: search using your query.

I've always found site: searches unnecessarily fiddly to do, but extraordinarily useful, so the feature blows my mind.
