Went to see The Odyssey. Bloody Amazing. I'm calling it for a swag of Oscars.
It was also the most beautiful quality movie - at the standard cinema - that I've ever seen. So crisp and bright. Going to be a let down going back to the usual blurry digital movies.

Counterintuitively.

It'd be nice if the makers were more in touch with the reality of casualisation in modern higher education. They're in fantasy land at the moment. I have to do a cybersecurity one today, that should be a laugh.

Google used to work like an extended memory for me - I could fire off 'kitchen sink' queries around half-remembered factoids and it'd give me what I was looking for, or the thing would at least be in the first page or two. Now, it decided what it thinks I mean and gives me a page of near-identical, wrong results based on things like location (which isn't even correct because my IP is in a major city miles away) and/or popularity and not my niche interests.
God I hate these compulsory learning tickbox things. Condescending videos and bullshit quizzes.
The academic integrity professional learning module I'm doing says 'most students want to complete their studies with integrity' is true. Having just marked two subjects, I can assure you that this is not true. More than half the class do not give a shit. Your module is wrong. They say they want to, but they just don't want to get caught cheating and don't want to see themselves as cheats.

I'm having a big attack of 'leave my cool thing alone'. I think it's not quite gatekeeping, but when something you appreciate gets popular, it gets watered down and misunderstood and attacked. I've been doing quite a bit of defensive 'well actually' this week.
Well at least a lot of classical scholars will be getting some publicity on their profiles, and booksellers should be doing a roaring trade.
Watching an almost unwatchable (hyped and choppy) video about deGoogleing and the ubiquity of corporate surveillance. And while I kinda knew most of this stuff at some level, being a keen student of infosec and Doctorow fan, it's kinda depressing when you see it all concisely drawn together. It's inescapable. It really is. Resistance is token at best. I'd argue we're obligated to try. But your life is now corporate property.

this little laptop only has 4 gig of memory, which is a bit sad. So that rules out KDE Plasma. I find XFCE always feels a little odd, not sure why. However I know it's very customisable so perhaps I can set up the menus and such to suit my taste.
4Gig is really a bit tragic, it's almost getting to the point of being unusable for web browsing. That's fine.
have to get my head around using sh instead of bash too.

I wondered about seeing what I could run just from the CLI but really it's 2026, a GUI is the thing, no? So apparently I can use x-windows (fast becoming retro!) and it seems any of the desktop environments will work.
Now what?
Gotta say, the single most useful piece of tech I have is a little Netgear wireless dongle. So often Linux (or now, BSD) doesn't recognise the onboard wireless, but plug this little device in and I have wifi on install. I can then configure the onboard later, usually, once I can download the requisite firmware.

There's a whole lot of life stuff I need to do that I do not want to do. There are small things, like going to gym and calling a plumber, and big things, like having some health tests, and doing taxes, and applying for jobs. At this moment I can't even muster the will to get off the couch. It's cold. I do not want to do any of this.
Had a crack at installing freeBSD on my old Lenovo Yoga - no joy so far; I need to work out how to configure the network interface, and the zfs setup which I'm clueless about. Gosh it's a while since I've had to RTFM!

A 'stakeholder' in the delivery of education is using an AI scan for keywords to determine the adequacy of our courses' coverage. I'm just aghast. The frequency of keywords deciding whether our courses meet their arbitrary standards. I can't even begin to articulate how nonsensical this is.
Sad to learn of the passing of Sam Neill. A glass of red (sadly not from Two Paddocks) and a watch of Jurassic Park will be in order.

Are you a member of a software development team? Run a worst case scenario. Assume that a hacker or someone with full access to your repos attacks your systems. How much damage can they do? Where are your backups and who has access? What happens if a key account is locked or closed? 'Just roll it back' wont work on a deleted account.

Distributions need to take a more professional approach to managing authorisation. Offboard inactive contributors. I assume OpenMandriva would have maintained a full backup on an alternative system.
We had a firecall today to a B-Double on fire. It was full of fertilizer. If it had been a little earlier that or if Telstra failure had still been impacting call delivery, the consequences could have been disastrous. Critical infrastructure should not be outsourced.

so apparently docx is basically compressed xml (if you unpack it, you can see the artefacts from LLM generation). And I was editing an ebook with calibre, and it looks like... xml. And in an interview Corey Doctorow mentioned that podcast feeds were just XML (containing a URL). So... basically, everything is XML then?
