Want to check how your website looks with Safari’s different bars?

I’ve just updated my little @Sketch@mastodon.design design kit for liquid glass.

@jordanhipwell@mastodon.world Ah good catch! Thanks! Well I guess that shows Apple is doubling down on the HIG statement to always place the ✕ at the leading side. No matter if it is a close or cancel action.

For me a settings sheet was always a bit of a trickier question, because settings are usually not saved on close, but applied directly. Though, the longer I look at it the more I feel like it makes sense to use a trailing checkmark in this case. This keeps the old pattern of the trailing “Done” button and works with a multi-step flow (if needed). I guess it also doesn’t hurt to confirm to the user that things are saved. Additionally this is how I understand the latest HIG phrasing and examples of the sheets: https://developer.apple.com/design/human-interface-guidelines/sheets#iOS-iPadOS And it matches quite well with the SwiftUI Toolbar placements. Too bad there is no .closeAction placement to make this super clear. 😅 4/5 🧵

A reason for the trailing placement is probably also the “Apple Account” branding or the placement of leading controls like segmented controls, search fields, and so on. Apps like Maps, Numbers, Wallet, Home, and Weather do this. Though, other apps also place buttons and segemented controls in the toolbar and have a leading close button like Safari, Calendar, Journal, Reminders. Another reason of the trailing positioning is the multi-step flow like for the account sheets in App Store, Music, etc. This ensures the close button stays in the same location even when navigating around. Though interestingly, Apple does switch that pattern around in some apps like Health. The close is on the leading end and changes to a checkmark on the trailing end when navigating down (in some views). That actually matches with the HIG! 3/5 🧵

Feels like most often the close buttons are placed on the trailing position. To me that is probably a remnant of the old placement of the “Done” button of pre iOS 26 aera, which always placed it on the trailing side. 2/5 🧵

I once again was wondering what the correct/best toolbar button placement for sheet close buttons are. So, I’ve inspected how Apple places their close buttons. 🕵️‍♂️

Unfortunately it’s quite different across the system, so it’s a bit hard to see a strict pattern. Some apps are even inconsistent within themselves like Safari, Wallet, or Weather.

(All screenshots are from iOS 26, but from what I can tell it’s the same on iOS 27)

I can highly recommend not using a pure white background to improve the contrast of the toolbar buttons. Just a slight off-white helps a lot. Now mix in a hint of a color to it and you even add a little bit of character. 😉 That’s what I do with my apps as well.

RE: @nicoreese@mastodon.social

Great analysis of this year’s Liquid Glass design changes. Especially in regards of use of HDR.

@xeophin@swiss.social Yeah, probably something like this. Maybe even combined with some automated upload to App Store Connect. Because seems like no one was checking the assets in any way.

@Iconfactory@iconfactory.world Nice, looking forward to the update! 🙌 Okay fair, it loads about 1 second (in good wlan). With ~260 sketches. Not something hugely blocking of course, just feels a bit unsnappy because I can't use the app right away. Though, if the launching was slower before that it may be a net win.

@Iconfactory@iconfactory.world Do you have any plans to properly update Linea for iPadOS 26 with full main menu support? Also it’s currently a bit rough at all of the popovers with the new liquid glass border radii. While I’m at it after the latest update, every time I open the app it shows the loading x of x sketches dialog for a second or two. That was snappier before. 😕

@staticnoisexyz@infosec.exchange Oh yeah, I hate those freaking ads. In Windows they don’t even try to hide them anymore. But those sneaky ads and notification (ads) aren’t that much better! 😤 I know from other people that stability is a big thing. For me (as a UI designer) I think change *can* be good. But obviously only for the better or for products to grow. But recently I feel like the opposite is the trend and stuff gets complicated and bloated.

I’m fully with you @paranoiq@witter.cz! Though, I felt like Linux also has companies behind it (depending on the distro)? But as you may see I don’t have any clue whatsoever 😅 @OndrejMirtes@phpc.social Beeing in control is generally a good thing! But I’m also on board of convenience and not having to have coding/commandline knowledge to achieve basic things. That’s what always scared me off from Linux. But maybe that’s an old/outdated image. Would you mind sharing a screenshot or two of the settings of your OS?

@desatyr@mastodon.social Okay, I see. That makes sense! As a macOS user I can tell you it’s not that different on this side in that regard. Was thinking more of specific UX quirks here and there. But indeed the whole experience of these tightly locked systems can be hella annoying. At least with the level of enshittification of the last decade or so. 🥲

RE: @daringfireball@mastodon.social

“I update apps manually, because I like reading release notes from developers who take the time to document changes, and I also like reading ‘Bug fixes and performance improvements’ over and over and over again from developers who do not.”

It me! 😄 now have to get used to use the homescreen quick action to get directly into the update tab.
