Creating a separate bootchain package that can easily be replaced by an alternative package (that has provides=('bootchain')) actually makes switching to alternative options easier.

This isn't about restricting users or forcing systemd on users, it's only about sane defaults.

No Microsoft account required to use the computer. No forced feature previews. No sudden changes on functionality to chase the new hype. No advertisements in the OS search bar or notification area. Stability is a big thing. How do elderly keep up with all the stuff Microsoft puts into Windows, all the sudden changes in UI? Install RedHat or Ubuntu LTS and your OS and supplications are stable for many years. Obviously, for power users it's leagues beyond Windows. There's no discussion.

@levi It’s easy to judge from the comfort of an armchair. Some administrators and developers may face legal liability and consequences for failing to comply with the law. It’s understandable that they’re weighing their options. Choose empathy over conspiracy.

Today I almost lost 2 years of shell history. I don't know what happened, but only the first 54 thousand lines were kept and the rest of the shell history disappeared.

I learned two things:

1. Having backups is damn important
2. You set a file attribute to only allow appending! No more breakages and sudden corruptions of the history files!

Date of birth in systemd-userdb in such a non story. There's already a real name, location and email address in the user record. It's the right technical solution for the technical problem.

Complain to the legislators and don't harass developers.
