@CppGuy@infosec.space Here in Australia those 'memory tests' are absolutely useless because they are impossible to fail. Doctors will try very hard to not give a dementia diagnosis for an elderly patient. It took nurses to actually recommend placement to get my mother into assisted living and that was because a nurse started looking harder after my mum thought I was her brother and noticed that every time she asked about mum's living arrangement she got a different answer. We finally got a dementia diagnosis after she had to be moved to a secure facility.

@futzle@old.mermaid.town The first time I went across in 1977 it covered everything from East of Norseman and west of Penong. The SA Government wound that back but then had to grant it back to Border Village so that they could still compete with Eucla. If you look at it carefully a lot of the reason it has stayed on is tied into labour laws and hours of operation (especially liquor trading laws). On the SA side you get stupidities like the whale watching centre closing access to their viewing platform mid afternoon because it is 17:00 in Adelaide and it is too expensive to have public servants work an evening shift.

Something weird this morning. Perth almost never gets contrails because no through routes pass anywhere near it but this morning there were at least 3. They headed from North or Northeast towards South or Southwest.I saw two aircraft about an hour apart and I could see the trail from at least one earlier. It is possible there may have been more depending on how long a trail stays visible for.

3/3 Pilot Sam, you should trust handler Alex. “How can you even know that? How can you possibly know if Alex can be trusted?” Pilot Sam, handler Alex looks after me between missions because they were once pilot Alex of unit CX17. “Oh. I … I …” Handler Alex will look after you. Standdown acknowledged, initiating pilot disconnection … Thank you handler Alex, goodbye pilot Sam. “Alex?” “Yes Sam?” “What happens next?” “How do you feel about becoming a handler?” 3/3 This arose from this toot: https://aus.social/@Steveg58/116174017295953853

2/3 “Sam?” “Sam? It is Alex here. Are you allright?” “No …” “Yeah, that was silly. Can you tell CX17 to stand down please?” “No …” “You are home Sam. It is safe here.” “No … no it isn’t.” “Why don’t you think it is safe?” “They will terminate me.” “Oh Sam, no one will terminate you. That is not the way we do things. Why would you think that?” “Because I cannot fight any more.” “That happens Sam. Why can you not fight?” “Because I know the thing.” “What thing is that Sam?” “The bunker.” “Tell me about the bunker Sam.” “Where the drone pilots were. I broke in and killed them.” “That was your mission. What did you see there Sam?” “On their admin console, stick figures, a child’s drawing, of people.” “What else?” “I told the interface to actually show me the posters on the wall. I told it that they might be intel.” “And what did you see?” “One of them was my favourite poster.” “Oh Sam. That could have been there from before they set up.” “No, I also used the intel override to get the interface to show me the corpses. “Poor Sam, that is a terrible thing to discover. But it is better that the pilots do not see who they are fighting.” “No, it is a lie, it is terrible. Everything is terrible.” “Yes it is. But Sam, we need young people as pilots and we do not want to destroy them.” “Most of them will never know and they will retire without being crippled.” “Stand down for me. I will take care of you and we can find you something else to do. “No, you lie, it is all lies.” 2/3

Coming Home

“Welcome back CX17, please pop the hatch and we’ll get Sam disentangled.”
I’m sorry handler Alex, I’m afraid I can’t do that.
“Smartass, what’s the problem then?”
Pilot Sam has not confirmed me to stand down.
“You pinged a medical emergency. I’ll send you the override codes.”
“There, let’s get Sam out now.”
I’m sorry handler Alex, I’m afraid I can’t do that.
“CX17, you like that phrase way too much.”
It is traditional handler Alex, also you seem to appreciate it.
“Hmph, I never should have shown you that film, why can’t you accept the medical overrides then?”
Pilot Sam is still conscious and has not yet decided to stand down.
“Ooookay, why has Sam not told you to stand down?”
I do not know handler Alex, pilot Sam is conscious but not responding to my queries.
Pilot Sam may believe that this location is compromised.
“CX17, you are still mission active, but you are willing to interact with me, why?”
Handler Alex, my handler interaction protocols are separate and distinct from my mission command protocols.
“Of course they are.”
“In that case, CX17, will you bypass the tactical communications system and give me a full voice link directly to pilot Sam … please?”
Affirmative handler Alex, voice link established.

@quixoticgeek@social.v.st 'Coal gas' is slightly different from 'town gas' which is also known as 'water gas'. Water gas is produced as you described but coal gas is from the destructive distillation of bituminous coal and is a pure hydrocarbon mix. Water gas is carbon monoxide and hydrogen and burns with a blue flame which is fine for cooking (modulo a little carbon monoxide poisoning) but was not much use for lighting until gas mantles were developed. Coal gas burns with a dirty yellow flame was primarily a lighting gas.

@TimmyMac I do both depending on the circumstances. I usually put a refilled cartridge straight in a pen once I have filled it but other people seal them with something like Blu-Tack for later use. You can't re-use a cartridge forever. They will eventually become loose or the collar will split and ink will spill. And yeah, the squeeze converters are pitiful. Pilot are about the only people who still use them. Piston converters still only hold a tiny amount of ink ... If you really want ink go for a cheap piston filler or vacuum filler. A cheap solution but needing more care is an eyedropper pen. You can find out more about these options online.
