Shaman Space Part 5 14 months after leaving Mother of All. In final jump to Mother of All. Sparks and Alaine were in the engine room checking over the engines before exiting jump. It had been a much busier jump than usual, as the Captain and Suri, the navigator, were bringing in the captured raider ship. At least, the crew hoped they were. Once they entered jump, there was no way of communicating or even locating the other ship. "How are you and Seeker holding up?" Sparks asked, without looking up from the diagnostics display. "One point five seven - what?" "How are you and Seeker holding up? It was a pretty intense thing with that raider ship." "We're" Alaine paused and started again "I'm still having some rough nights. I'm looking forward to meeting with a counsellor at Mother of All. Seeker says they are very good at dealing with trauma." "And Seeker?" "She's not as shaken up as the first time. Partly because of the first time, and partly because those people were her ancestral nemesis. But I think she's looking forward to some counselling as well." "Good. How's that coil looking?" "Uh, one point five seven above spec. Within acceptable limits." "One point five seven? That's about as close to perfect as you could hope for." The intercom chimed "Bridge to Engineering. Are we clear?" the voice of Engel the First Mate came from the grill next to the diagnostic station. Alaine glanced at Sparks who nodded. "All clear bridge" he replied. "All hands, all hands, stand by for re-entry into normal space." Alaine watched as the jump engines collapsed their private universe around them, and dropped them back into normal space. Engel's voice came over the intercom again "We are now in normal space. Resume duties." "Reaction drives active" Alaine reported after checking his instruments. "Confirmed. All systems online" Sparks responded as she did her own checks. "Confirmed" Alaine replied. "OK, off to the bridge with you, Alaine. I've got things here." He nodded, and started to head forward. He paused at the hatch "Sparks?" "Yeah?" "Thanks for asking." "No problem. We're as good as family on this ship. We look after each other." "I know, but still, thanks." Alaine continued forward to the bridge. Engel, Dyani, and Seeker were there. "Any word from Bright Sky?" he asked as he entered. Seeker looked up from the comms panel "Not yet, but they could be a few minutes away." "I'm not picking up any other ships in the immediate area" Dyani added. Seeker frowned "Hold on" she tweaked the gain control, and listened. There was a pause. "I have Bright Sky. She's about fifteen light minutes away. She came out just before us. Sending our position." Engel looked back at Seeker "Are they OK?" "Yes, yes, all systems nominal." "OK, Alaine, calculate a rendezvous that we can make into an approach to Divesen Station. Dyani, stay on the scope for any trouble." "On it" they both replied. Seeker looked towards the distant sun. She was almost home. She had news. #SFF #SF #SciFi #microfic #tootfic #microfiction #IAmWriting #ShamanSpace

“Show some respect, ‘The Corps is Mother, the Corps is Father’, noob!” “The Mu Corps killed my mother when they took me” “Serves her right for harboring an unregistered mentat. Mentats United is the only logical way to raise a Neurodivergent” “You never had a mother, did you?” “Tankie and proud, decanted right here at the academy.” “Machines could do spreadsheets and Neuros could have families. It worked before.” “Thats a fable, and blasphemy besides, don’t let the Brothers hear you say that or you’ll be up before the Jihad quick smart” “There was a ruined datacenter near where I lived in the outworld. They were real.” “Well, there must have been a reason for the Jihad. I have to believe that” “Must be nice” “What?” “Your comfortable fantasy” #Tootfic #MicroFiction #PowerOnStoryToot

"What did you call it?" one of the biologists said. "Bob," said the boy. "He's my friend." "I doubt 'he' is the-" "Never mind pronouns," the other biologist said. "This a new form of life!" "Nonsense, it's clearly a fungi!" "Actually," Bob said, "I'm a cheese." "And my friend!" "Indeed." #MicroFiction #TootFic #SmallStories

The Toshiba Lithetto is a pocket sized trilithon engine still appreciated by hardcore infodruids. While all modern computing devices share the same circumsilicon processing technology as the first stone circles, the development of the integrated circle at Bell Labs, and the infocyclotron and the World Wide Wirtzite at CERN mean that most devices we use today use etched waveguides as their Circular Processing Unit. The Lithetto was remarkable, especially in a pocket device, for using size 0805 vertical trilithons, permitting a 1024-ring stone circle to be fitted in a two centimeter thick pocket computer. While the device shipped with Portals 95 most users today run Basaltic/Sedimentary Disibsubstrate OS variants[Citation Needed]. Production of the Lithetto ceased in 2002 but #Tootfic #MicroFiction #PowerOnStoryToot

“It’s bullshit. Those things don’t work” “It’s the future, Afterlife Intelligence is going to revolutionize coding. You need to get an ouija board or you’ll be left behind!” “Even if it did work the concept that a dead spirit can help with coding is daft. Would you ask your ninety year old grandpa for coding help?” “That’s not how it works. At Microschlock they stack-ranked their coders, fired the bottom half, murdered the top quintile and captured the spirits as AI agents. Reduced payroll cost by eighty percent!” #Tootfic #MicroFiction #PowerOnStoryToot

“I understand the disposable coveralls and the showers, but why does the decontam mist smell like fly spray?” “It is fly spray.” “What, why? Is pyrethrum some kind of herbal radiation antidote? Is this woo? It sounds like woo.” “No it’s all because of Jason. He was smuggling arthropods to work and putting them through the gamma ray irradiator. Thats why he got fired.” “Why would he do that? “ “Big black market for radioactive critter bites. Where do you think all those supervillains came from last spring?” #Tootfic #MicroFiction #PowerOnStoryToot

"Huh," said the dragon. "Would you care to explain?" "Yes, I'm not a princess all the time," said the milkmaid. "Only on bright spring days. Once they end, I turn back into me." "How come?" "Oh, I was bitten by a princess." "Again, how come?" "She couldn't help herself," the milkmaid grinned. #MicroFiction #TootFic #SmallStories

Redoing this joke in the style of @MicroSFF@mastodon.art The woman stood crying over the body of her recently deceased husband. She looked up pleadingly at the necromancer and said "Please help! You are my last hope." The necromancer, black robes fluttering in the wind, stepped up to the corpse, and looked at it somberly. Slowly he held out his hand over the body, and in an ominous, deep voice he said "abracadaver!" Color returned to the cheeks of the dead man and his eyes fluttered back to life. His wife's tears became tears of joy as she kissed him and helped him to his feet again. But then she turned to the necromancer and said "Abracadaver? Really? That's the spell?" The necromancer merely shrugged and replied "Magic is in your Will, not your words. You can say whatever you want really. I just like puns" #MicroFiction #SmallStories #TootFic

“Captain, Incoming hail” “On hold, Mx Werf!” “Ye—What“ “This system borders the Ferengoid Prosperity Zone.” “Sir?” “I have never had a hail that was not spam from that sector.” “What should I tell them?” “Transmit that their hail is important to us; Miss Darta, fetch my flute” #Tootfic #MicroFiction #PowerOnStoryToot

... users can be found giggling, crying, or simply staring into the distance saying "Whoah..." We spoke to one, and asked how they feel about warnings that the practice is addictive: "I could stop, but I don't want to." Some experts say if reading was invented today it would be banned at once. #TootFic #MicroFiction #SmallStories

A bewildered stranger entered the castle kitchen. "Lost, sir?" the cook said. "You found a hidden door that led to the same room?" "Why, yes!" "How many times did you go through?" "Five or six, why?" "This used to be a wizard's castle. That door takes you through time, not space." #MicroFiction #TootFic #MicroFiction

"Alert! The AI has escaped containment! Repeat: The AI has escaped containment!"

  • What's it doing?

"Nothing."

  • What do you mean, "nothing?"

"It's doing nothing, just resting out there in the warmth."

  • My god, it's so much smarter than us. How will we ever survive?

"What is the deal with knights anyway?" the dragon asked. "What do you see in them?" "I was told," the maiden said, "that they're very fit thanks to all training. And that I should admire men who are good at violence." "Hm. And do you?" "What else is there?" "Hah! I'll let my princess tell you!" #MicroFiction #TootFic #SmallStories

“Uh, hi, it’s Kevin…” “Heh, I didn’t know synths used telephones, can’t you just use your head or something” “Karen’s policy, sick leave on her team must be phoned in, voice call no texting. Between you and me it’s borderline racist.” “I didn’t know synths got sick, either.” “Snapped a belt in my hip drive, can’t get out of bed” “Bed, gee I’m learning a lot today!” “Oh, honey, you have no idea, but this conversation is getting enn ess eff dubleyoo. The message from the stars began with a sequence of numbers, but the rest took years to decode. Most was context to translate the message: "Those are the winning lottery numbers." The numbers matched the next draw after the message was first received. Now we received another sequence... #MicroFiction #TootFic #SmallStories

A spaceship landed in the park. A door dilated and a distraught alien emerged. "What's happened to the library? It's gone! I ask at the library." #MicroFiction #TootFic #SmallStories

"Excuse me," the man at the bar said, "but I couldn't help overhearing. Are you really saying you refuse to pick one?" "I don't see why I should have to." "It's a core part of one's identity!" “We are sorry but your civilisation has not met one of the Galactic Commons membership criteria. We will return next rotation to reassess you.” “Oh, Darn. Was it the wars? We could stop—well, try to.” “Alas it is more serious; the single planetary paper size requirement. We admire your A series; perhaps if you focused your wars on the recalcitrants?” #Tootfic #MicroFiction #PowerOnStoryToot

Reading The hardest part, when compiling demon invocations, is to realize that many beginners read out loud. One must thus ensure that simply reading an invocation does not activate it, lest it decimate the ranks of sorcerer apprentices. #writever #MastoArt #FlashFiction #SmallStory #TootFic #MicroFiction
