Shaman Space Part 5 14 months after leaving Mother of All. In final jump to Mother of All. Sparks and Alaine were in the engine room checking over the engines before exiting jump. It had been a much busier jump than usual, as the Captain and Suri, the navigator, were bringing in the captured raider ship. At least, the crew hoped they were. Once they entered jump, there was no way of communicating or even locating the other ship. "How are you and Seeker holding up?" Sparks asked, without looking up from the diagnostics display. "One point five seven - what?" "How are you and Seeker holding up? It was a pretty intense thing with that raider ship." "We're" Alaine paused and started again "I'm still having some rough nights. I'm looking forward to meeting with a counsellor at Mother of All. Seeker says they are very good at dealing with trauma." "And Seeker?" "She's not as shaken up as the first time. Partly because of the first time, and partly because those people were her ancestral nemesis. But I think she's looking forward to some counselling as well." "Good. How's that coil looking?" "Uh, one point five seven above spec. Within acceptable limits." "One point five seven? That's about as close to perfect as you could hope for." The intercom chimed "Bridge to Engineering. Are we clear?" the voice of Engel the First Mate came from the grill next to the diagnostic station. Alaine glanced at Sparks who nodded. "All clear bridge" he replied. "All hands, all hands, stand by for re-entry into normal space." Alaine watched as the jump engines collapsed their private universe around them, and dropped them back into normal space. Engel's voice came over the intercom again "We are now in normal space. Resume duties." "Reaction drives active" Alaine reported after checking his instruments. "Confirmed. All systems online" Sparks responded as she did her own checks. "Confirmed" Alaine replied. "OK, off to the bridge with you, Alaine. I've got things here." He nodded, and started to head forward. He paused at the hatch "Sparks?" "Yeah?" "Thanks for asking." "No problem. We're as good as family on this ship. We look after each other." "I know, but still, thanks." Alaine continued forward to the bridge. Engel, Dyani, and Seeker were there. "Any word from Bright Sky?" he asked as he entered. Seeker looked up from the comms panel "Not yet, but they could be a few minutes away." "I'm not picking up any other ships in the immediate area" Dyani added. Seeker frowned "Hold on" she tweaked the gain control, and listened. There was a pause. "I have Bright Sky. She's about fifteen light minutes away. She came out just before us. Sending our position." Engel looked back at Seeker "Are they OK?" "Yes, yes, all systems nominal." "OK, Alaine, calculate a rendezvous that we can make into an approach to Divesen Station. Dyani, stay on the scope for any trouble." "On it" they both replied. Seeker looked towards the distant sun. She was almost home. She had news. #SFF #SF #SciFi #microfic #tootfic #microfiction #IAmWriting #ShamanSpace

@stux@mstdn.social "Enter prompt=? "Democracy's spirit, ranging for revenge...with a monarch’s voice shall cry Havoc! and let slip the dogs of war." "Parameters=?" the AI prompted. Marcia A. thought for a moment, then typed "Bank accounts over one million US dollars after currency conversion. Repeat every 30 days." "Result=?" "One. Zero all found accounts. Two. Transfer obtained funds to personal funds not previously zeroed." She smiled, pressing Enter. "HAVOC." End scene #microfiction

"AI with LLMs were a big craze back in the roaring twenties." "Yeah, I heard of that. What happened?" "Well, turned out that they poisoned themselves by eating their own dog food. So now we can only use them to write funny alternative history stories." "And bad music." "And bad music, yep." "Interesting. Well, break's over. Back to my hoverboard to deliver some data units." "Yeah, a shame we can't have networks anymore because those old LLMs would still try to go rogue." #Microfiction #MicroSF

“Show some respect, ‘The Corps is Mother, the Corps is Father’, noob!” “The Mu Corps killed my mother when they took me” “Serves her right for harboring an unregistered mentat. Mentats United is the only logical way to raise a Neurodivergent” “You never had a mother, did you?” “Tankie and proud, decanted right here at the academy.” “Machines could do spreadsheets and Neuros could have families. It worked before.” “Thats a fable, and blasphemy besides, don’t let the Brothers hear you say that or you’ll be up before the Jihad quick smart” “There was a ruined datacenter near where I lived in the outworld. They were real.” “Well, there must have been a reason for the Jihad. I have to believe that” “Must be nice” “What?” “Your comfortable fantasy” #Tootfic #MicroFiction #PowerOnStoryToot

"What did you call it?" one of the biologists said. "Bob," said the boy. "He's my friend." "I doubt 'he' is the-" "Never mind pronouns," the other biologist said. "This a new form of life!" "Nonsense, it's clearly a fungi!" "Actually," Bob said, "I'm a cheese." "And my friend!" "Indeed." #MicroFiction #TootFic #SmallStories

#introduction time! This account follows the tribulations of a fictional #baseball team, as sort of a #microfiction experiment adjacent to the narrative space once held by #blaseball. The Ellicott City Screaming Shrimps play baseball in the Precision league of #mmolb, a fantasy simulation game. If that sounds fun to you, try it yourself! https://mmolb.com/ Account is maintained by @ephesossh@mastodon.online and is not owned by MMOLB.

The Toshiba Lithetto is a pocket sized trilithon engine still appreciated by hardcore infodruids. While all modern computing devices share the same circumsilicon processing technology as the first stone circles, the development of the integrated circle at Bell Labs, and the infocyclotron and the World Wide Wirtzite at CERN mean that most devices we use today use etched waveguides as their Circular Processing Unit. The Lithetto was remarkable, especially in a pocket device, for using size 0805 vertical trilithons, permitting a 1024-ring stone circle to be fitted in a two centimeter thick pocket computer. While the device shipped with Portals 95 most users today run Basaltic/Sedimentary Disibsubstrate OS variants[Citation Needed]. Production of the Lithetto ceased in 2002 but #Tootfic #MicroFiction #PowerOnStoryToot

The Victorian scientists crowded into the conference hall. In the center of the stage, a pigeon-sized green bird with a yellow beak perched on a tall stand, calmy and intelligently surveying the assembled gentlemen (women were not permitted). After the hubbub had settled, Sir Cuthbert Flummox took the stage and stood proudly next to the exotic bird. "The answer is an emphatic yes," he said. "AI---Animal Intelligence---is real. My research zoologists have scoured the world and we have found an animal amenable to trained for higher-order thinking." He paused to let the magnitude of the discovery sink in. "The shortage of engineers and colonial administrators will be a thing of the past." He held out his hand, and the bird carefully stepped onto his wrist. All eyes were locked onto the strange bird. Flummox held up the bird and asked in a loud voice, "What is your name?" "Pretty Polly" squawked the parrot. An audible gasp swept around the auditorium, followed by an excited murmur. "Where are we?" demanded Flummox. The bird hopped onto one leg and, after a pause, screeched "London!" Journalists were rushing out of the hall to stop the presses. "What,"thundered Flummox, "five plus seven?" The bird was startled by the commotion in the hall and the overbearing inventor. It briefly hid its head under its wing, and when the hall subsided, it straightened up and said proudly, "Ten!" Flummox smiled and turned to the audience. "Yes every new technology has its growing pains, but the intelligence and potential of this bird is self-evident. All that is required is more training. I am offering the prescient invsors of the city the opportunity to sieze the new frontier of AI with me!" #microfiction #ai

Aleks, bartender at the Lute and Pillage Tavern, stared at Tara the barmaid. "Are you telling me," he asked, "that you and your girlfriend are banging each other right in her room, while her father is home? Kids these days!" "You don't understand," Tara replied. "My girlfriend is a succubus. If we don't fool around, THAT'S when her father gets concerned...." #microfiction #flashfiction

Charles had already taken 20 minutes to make Rita’s footlong Black Forest Ham sandwich, but he didn’t care. This was what being an artisan was all about. Not only did he create what looked to be an actual black forest out of burnt whole wheat, but he created small pickle people in the forest, contemplating their existence in a world of ash. “I just want to eat,” pleaded Rita. “Oh, you’ll eat,” said Charles. “You’ll feast on disillusionment and ennui.” Charles’ eyes lit up with anticipation. “Is that a kind of mayo? I said no mayo.” Rita was starting to think she should have gone to Jersey Mike’s instead. In the end, Charles served up a dish that looked like a Tim Burton nightmare. There was a beauty to the bizarre desolation, but it was not easy to put it in your mouth. “Pass,” said Rita, who paid for three bags of chips and hurried back to work. Charles, heartbroken that his creation was abandoned, started to wonder, Had his years at Subway University been for naught? Was he the Titan Turkey? He realized his emptiness was reflected in his own creation, and was just as hard to swallow. That day was the last time Charles would wield a mustard spreader. #artisan #MicroFiction #SmallStories #MastoPrompt

“It’s bullshit. Those things don’t work” “It’s the future, Afterlife Intelligence is going to revolutionize coding. You need to get an ouija board or you’ll be left behind!” “Even if it did work the concept that a dead spirit can help with coding is daft. Would you ask your ninety year old grandpa for coding help?” “That’s not how it works. At Microschlock they stack-ranked their coders, fired the bottom half, murdered the top quintile and captured the spirits as AI agents. Reduced payroll cost by eighty percent!” #Tootfic #MicroFiction #PowerOnStoryToot
