Charles had already taken 20 minutes to make Rita’s footlong Black Forest Ham sandwich, but he didn’t care. This was what being an artisan was all about. Not only did he create what looked to be an actual black forest out of burnt whole wheat, but he created small pickle people in the forest, contemplating their existence in a world of ash. “I just want to eat,” pleaded Rita. “Oh, you’ll eat,” said Charles. “You’ll feast on disillusionment and ennui.” Charles’ eyes lit up with anticipation. “Is that a kind of mayo? I said no mayo.” Rita was starting to think she should have gone to Jersey Mike’s instead. In the end, Charles served up a dish that looked like a Tim Burton nightmare. There was a beauty to the bizarre desolation, but it was not easy to put it in your mouth. “Pass,” said Rita, who paid for three bags of chips and hurried back to work. Charles, heartbroken that his creation was abandoned, started to wonder, Had his years at Subway University been for naught? Was he the Titan Turkey? He realized his emptiness was reflected in his own creation, and was just as hard to swallow. Redoing this joke in the style of @MicroSFF@mastodon.art The woman stood crying over the body of her recently deceased husband. She looked up pleadingly at the necromancer and said "Please help! You are my last hope." The necromancer, black robes fluttering in the wind, stepped up to the corpse, and looked at it somberly. Slowly he held out his hand over the body, and in an ominous, deep voice he said "abracadaver!" Color returned to the cheeks of the dead man and his eyes fluttered back to life. His wife's tears became tears of joy as she kissed him and helped him to his feet again. But then she turned to the necromancer and said "Abracadaver? Really? That's the spell?" My mother began to cry as we left Dr. Briar's office. Nothing dramatic, just small tears and shallow breaths that made it past the chaos in her head. Irremediable. Her hand was squeezing mine so hard that it hurt, but I understood. Through the crowds of the city and the subway, she held me and only let go when we stood before my room. I took a big step to avoid the bleached spot on the floor, lay on the bed, and shut my eyes. The door closed, and I could hear her slump against it. Sobbing. Sadness welled up in me as I reached out into the darkness behind my eyes with my hurting hand. They coalesced from the shifting haze and flashes, reaching for the pain in my fingers and my soul, tearing it away, but it just whetted their appetite. They turned towards the door, lusting for the sensation that lay behind, and it took all of me to hold them back.
