@DavidM_yeg@beige.party just like the French and their Maginot Line, the US generals and strategists currently in charge are so wedded to the idea of their superiority that they will not think outside of their narrow box. Just as the French did with DeGaulle, Trump, Hegseth & Co have done to any officer who has dared to question them. Aside from the general boycott, I was also wondering what American industry we should put the screws to next (we’re doing tourism and booze, what else can we target that will hurt these MAGA asshats)? Could we get Canadians to cancel their American streaming service subscriptions or Amazon Prime accounts en masse?

I don’t think that it goes far enough, but it is a start, and it suggests that some backbench LPC MPs are listening. The more of us that sign it, and others that may come up, the better they will be equipped to stand up to Carney, the PMO, and his cabinet. I am hoping that the people who live in the multimillion $ lakeshore condos are raising holy hell about this.

@benroyce@mastodon.social oh, no doubt, but our job is to make it as difficult as possible for them. My suggestion is just one of the many roadblocks to throw in their way. Others are: ending monopolies, enacting wealth taxes, enforcing effective antitrust laws, ending limited liability corporations, ending corporate welfare, growing unions, reducing or eliminating dividend and capital gains tax credits (income is income) etc. etc. @infobeautiful@vis.social

@benroyce@mastodon.social part of the solution is to legislate that intangible assets like shares, options, derivatives, bonds etc. cannot be used as collateral for loans. In addition to closing the loophole, it reduces the risks that financial institutions will be caught, as they were by bad debt in 2008, when thr markets crash. @infobeautiful@vis.social

@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us the problem with not having a written constitution is that people, including governments, have no real idea what their rights and responsibilities are in the Byzantine morass. Of course, if there is no ability or will to enforce abuses of a written Constitution, it is only as good as the paper it’s written on, but at least ordinary people will have some inkling of what the principles are and how they are being violated. @twobiscuits@graz.social

@modulux I think that’s easier to explain. The rest of the world looked at all of the things that Bush did and wondered WTF; however, many USians looked at it and thought that it was fully justified because those “A-rabs” dared to attack the good ol’ USA, and needed to be “taught a lesson they won’t soon forget.” I got into a rip roaring argument with Bush supporters, and this was their argument (they became Trumpers and I no longer speak to them). @Remittancegirl

And, it’s not just end-stage capitalism, it’s the fact that every single one of us in the “developed world” would have to admit that we are burning the planet and sowing the seeds of our own destruction and suffering. @Remittancegirl the main purpose of news media is to sell advertising. The “News” is just the vehicle on which to hang their ads. Trump was and continues to be catnip to a significant portion of the population. Even those of us who know better and who have despised him ever since he first appeared on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous (I hope Robin Leach is burning in hell) still click on those videos, posts, and stories that give the media clicks and therefore $$$$.

The media narrative since Reagan/Thatcher has been “government & politicians bad/Corporations & businessmen good,” and “everyone just has to pull up their bootstraps to rely on themselves for everything.” Most governments have done very little to counter this false narrative. That leaves most people scrambling so hard that they have no bandwidth to pay attention to the antics of just another “crooked” politician. 2/2

@Remittancegirl I agree with you, but I’m not sure that the thinking that the Russians have spicy (or boring) Kompromat is entirely a fantasy. Given all of the other things that you’ve listed. It is almost certain that a lot of nations and people have lots of Kompromat on him, including a lot of powerful people in the US. This also applies to everyone in his administration, the GOP, the SCROTUS, and that is why they have worked so hard for years to control the media. 1/2

@nuintari it’s not just rude, it’s really dumb. Do people not understand that everyone around them can hear and are listening to the ENTIRE conversation? Have they told the party on the other side that they are in a public place?
