This is so textbook theft via LLM... the enclosure of the commons is going at full speed. Posit established a kind of monopolistic position in the R ecosystem, and it's past time the community starts to move towards breaking free from it. Both Rstudio and the tidyverse are essential infrastructure (not only) for most of academia.

@futurebird I guess you're aware that species keys like that have been at the foundation of IDing all kinds of organisms for many decades. This format is pretty much unchanged, I've used some that were from the first half of the 20th century, but I have no idea when they were created. I quite like the very simple way they made it interactive in the link you shared! The fact there are photos/drawings definitely helps as most traditional keys are pure text and you have to know the body part names.

@JorisMeys I've been very annoyed by Posit's extreme pivot to AI, but I hadn't even considered this dimension of the problem! RStudio is the defacto standard IDE for teaching R, and having an AI assistant built-in really makes things pretty difficult not just in an exam context... no one needs one more source of variability and mess while teaching a practical.

@tante Truly great piece! I especially like that you mentioned how widespread it's getting in research and how that undermines the foundation of knowledge creation and transmission. One other problem with the AI is THE FUTURE narrative I feel is very important is how many people in the left embrace the criti-hype instance, assuming the text extruder is way more powerful/useful than it actually is, which makes it much easier to build this fatalist narrative.

I live in a smaller town, and there are multiple RAMs/Silverados parking in the surroundings in this panel buildings neighborhood. That, the total suburbanization of the villages around town and the horrible new residential neighbourhoods with fenced buildings and no public transport is destroying the pretty good urbanism the town had.

@_elena Ladybugs are predators, and the favorite food of most species are Aphids. Do you have any house plants that might be infested with aphids or other small bugs? It might be hanging around because of that. It's rare for insects to need water, especially in a controlled indoors environment, unless it's really warm and dry.
