The Predatory Sea: Human Trafficking and Captivity in the Seventeenth-Century Caribbean – Book Presentation on Monday, 9 March, 1pm.

As part of our online lecture series “Ships & Seafaring 1500–1800“, we are delighted to welcome Prof Dr Casey Schmitt (Cornell University) for a book presentation that promises to reshape how we think about maritime violence, captivity, and colonialism.

A century before the height of the Atlantic slave trade, early modern racialized slavery emerged through practices of captive-taking and human trafficking in the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Caribbean. Schmitt’s book – the first full-length study of this deeply entangled history of captivity and colonialism – reframes our understanding of early modern racialized slavery and colonialism.

We are delighted to welcome Jean Soulat, Director of the Archaeology of Piracy Research Program (Archéologie de la Piraterie) and researcher at the LandArc Laboratory, affiliated with the CNRS (UMR 6273 CRAHAM, University of Caen).

Jean Soulat will present one of his current projects, a study of a pirate lair on Sainte-Marie Island, Madagascar. Sainte-Marie was a favored hideout for pirates in the 17th and 18th centuries, and weathered gravestones on the island still bear witness to this turbulent past.
