Last year #Utrecht widened ~1 mile (1.2 km) of bike lanes on either side of a major retail, freight, transit street so that people on bikes could safely pass ➕ ride side-by-side.
The project also added tons of bike parking, parklets, trees, safer street crossings. Lost ~50 car parking spaces.

I volunteer with a Utrecht non-profit De Fietsmeesters to help teach adults how to bike. Students are almost always women, and mostly new immigrants. There are 16 new riders in this class, and 4 of us volunteers.
By the end of 10 weeks almost everyone is successfully biking on the road — it's so empowering!

Amsterdamsestraatweg is a busy Utrecht bus & freight corridor, residential & shopping street, now transformed with mini-parks, lots of bike parking, better street lighting + 2.6-meter bike lanes of smooth, just-poured red asphalt (if it's not fresh Kermit is it fresh Elmo?). The whole project is just over 1km long and it looks and rides great!
Een drukke Utrecht goederencorridor en winkelstraat, nu omgetoverd met bomen en 2,6 meter breed fietspaden. Fantastisch uit!

Imagine stumbling upon this well-maintained route, just traveling home. I appreciate beautiful unexpected bikepaths throughout the Netherlands.
Stel je voor dat je op deze goed onderhouden route struikelt, gewoon op weg naar huis. Ik waardeer de onverwachte, prachtige fietspaden door heel Nederland.

@Stoori You can rent if you have a transit pass. There is such a huge demand (remember most of those 800 bikes are gone by 10AM) that providing extra bikes for visitors would take too much space. There are plenty of bike rental places near most stations.

Dutch transportation planners are experts in "Induced Demand", in this case, induced demand for bike-share bikes.
Every train station in the Netherlands rents bikes to train pass holders for €4.65 (about $5US) for 24 hours.
These OV-fiets in #Utrecht are all gone by 10AM. A clear indication of induced demand for bikes (as well as Induced Demand for good transit + bike lanes).
