i was thinking the first smol game could be a 2D adventure that's basically a stripped down version of hero quest, no animation just 2D drawings. i've coded things like that before so it's not too crazy but it's actually over scoped so, probably not the first one. first one will probably be rebuilding my sigmar's garden clone as a 2D game and using mollytime for dope ambiance and interactive sound effects, and that could be the foundation needed to build the earlier idea

I wasn't originally planning moving my shit off github since the service had been very reliable in the 15 years I've used it and I figured it was better for discoverability (which in retrospect, I'm unaware of anybody coming to one of my projects via any means other that me talking about it on socials or directly), but the quality of service has been so poor for such a sustained period of time I've already started moving things to codeberg.

I made *counts* 17 sound effects for a game jam game (4 yesterday and 13 today), and I'm really proud of how they all turned out. The game is a simple platformer, and oh my god having punchy coherent sound effects really pulls it all together >:D iirc the deadline is tomorrow, so I'll share more once we launch.

my linux sound problems in 2006: i can't have more than one program play sound at once, but i usually open xmms first so it's basically a non-issue idk why anyone would ever want anything better, my linux sound problems in 2026: sometimes, infrequently, midi playback speeds up slightly and it drives me up the fucking wall. i think it might only happen when my computer is plugged in, but i'm not sure. i will kill a hostage every hour, (disclaimer 4 spooks & losers: the hostag...

there's a hypothetical compiler exploit that i always thought was a bit out there but it was a big deal with some folks, and i haven't heard anyone talk about it in a hot minute. the gist is, you make a custom version of clang or whatever that adds a payload into what it builds (presumably not everything or it would be easy to track down) including itself such that it is self-perpetuating, and then you somehow trick the clang maintainers into shipping that instead of a real release buil...

this project is a dignified non-dogmatic rationalist marketplace-of-ideas meritocracy. that is why this particular controversial technical issue is beyond discussion, and we will be moving forward with my personal opinion without any community input. it is fine for me to have this position as the BDFL because if you don't like it you can always fork our open source code and spend decades building up the institutional material support necessary to maintain this critical infrastructure

I'm building what a sprite instancing system, which means I'm building a particle system. I'm tracking their positions in a repeating coordinate space such that they can move and scroll past endlessly. These are drawn with pre-multiplied alpha blending and sorted in back-to-front order. However, because the sprites can overlap, the draw order can change as they move. As a work around I made it so they only re-sort when out of view, but that can lead to oddities when the camera mo...
