  So I’m designing a new #GUI toolkit with #REPL built-in, heavy on #UNIX philosophy and shell integration. Inspired by ed(1), of course. But I need to stress-test this design against possible use-cases for such a GUI. What are the small GUI apps you use daily or want to have that’d benefit from a really simple custom GUI you can hack up in an hour?   I like the affordances in this book I’m reading now. Every single page has author’s name, book name, chapter number and name, and page number. This helps in identifying the book by photo or quickly jotting down references to the chapter. It’s a good #UX!

  My #paper #writing workflow so far is: • Write a rought draft as fast as I can, on as little pages as possible (often one page—I swing the short story / #microfiction way) • Often with one paragraph per line, with no blank lines between paragraphs.   I like the simplicity of #English handwritten cursive. There’s basically one way to connect letters. Most letters have pretty loops. The amount of ambiguous letters is minimal. At least in the lowercase letters. Compared to #Russian letters which are quite overloaded and sometimes ambiguous. And have two ways to connect letters that are context-dependent!   Filling in my Common Place Book with quotes from Proust I noticed a couple of things: • Proust is verbose, occupying 1/4 of the page at once. • It’s better to write in longhand for future legibility. Which is part of the problem of verbosity and page occupation. • Resulting from these two, it’s going really slow for my Common Place filling. But it matters for future me, so I’m ready to tolerate that.

  Idea for a physical calendar: a bracelet with rotating parts. Five of these parts are base 2 encoded day of the month. Another four are the month. Given that these only need two states, the whole thing can be really simple. 3D-printed, carved, paper-folded, whatever. Using a padlock as calendar? Hmmmm, maybe?

  I really like this self-sufficiency of old textbooks. You don’t need anything but the textbook. It has descriptions, rules, exercises, and references—all in one package. It’s exemplified pretty starkly by the difference between Sokolov’s GESS stenography course book I’m completing, and Gregg Notehand textbook.
