I really like this self-sufficiency of old textbooks. You don’t need anything but the textbook. It has descriptions, rules, exercises, and references—all in one package. It’s exemplified pretty starkly by the difference between Sokolov’s GESS stenography course book I’m completing, and Gregg Notehand textbook. Sokolov’s has detailed explanations, exercises, tons of exercises, tips for professional use. While the utility of Gregg book is spread over the book itself (introduction,) tapes (dictation practice,) and handbooks (exercises.) Guess which book I like most? Is the art of self-sufficient books lost to the ages and capitalism?
