@mogwai_poet@mastodon.social That two-part message is kinda funny taken together but way funnier if I imagine it as two separate, unrelated signs.

@mogwai_poet@mastodon.social Not to mention, you don't want to be driving down the road only to notice youre dragging a moose with its tongue stuck to the metal car.
-
@CarlMuckenhoupt@mastodon.social 2025-01-08 20:04
@mogwai_poet@mastodon.social Good last point. Attempting to stop the moose by getting out of your car and shooing it away is not advisable.

@mogwai_poet@mastodon.social Oh man, the last thing I want is to be dealing with an angry moose with its tongue frozen to some exposed metal chunk on my car.

@mogwai_poet@mastodon.social many years ago I was doing some fieldwork in Australia and a mob of wallabies licked the dust off the car at the end of the day. I guess they must have been chasing salt or some other mineral, the patterns their little tongues made were so cute.

@mogwai_poet@mastodon.social I was at a sounding rocket range north of the polar circle once. Everything from supplies to scientific experiments is shipped by container, and naturally these containers have a thin layer of seawater on them. Let me tell you, there's nothing funnier than leading scientific experts running around with brooms trying to scare off moose, which just keep licking their experiment container.

@mogwai_poet@mastodon.social @BernieDoesIt@mstdn.social Lessons learned from this sign: do not rent moose, they prefer to be sold wholesaledo not wash your car with a sponge, they prefer to be bathed as a kitten by their mother, as their human mother, you must lick your car clean

@mogwai_poet@mastodon.social Reminds me of a popular overnight hiking spot in BC where apparently the porcupines have grown a taste for car tires so people were coming back after a hike and having flat tires. Now it's recommended to surround your car with chicken wire before leaving for your hike.

@mogwai_poet@mastodon.social I was expecting 2 to be because they can strip the paint like cow tongues do.

@stuartl@mastodon.longlandclan.id.au 2025-01-08 21:59
@mogwai_poet@mastodon.social Punctuation is important. Sign *should* read: "DO NOT LET MOOSE…" "…LICK YOUR CAR" The ellipsis is actually significant here.

@WhyNotZoidberg@topspicy.social 2025-01-08 22:10
@mogwai_poet@mastodon.social Also there is a good idea to put up salt stones in the forest. Helps all kind of herbivores.

@mogwai_poet@mastodon.social it just sounds like a piece of age old wisdom presented in metaphorical form. Not entirely sure what the metaphor would be disguising, but still.

-
@Sir_Osis_of_Liver@beige.party 2025-01-08 23:03
@mogwai_poet@mastodon.social Okay, agreed. However, have you tried to stop a moose from doing anything? They are not ones for quiet diplomacy and negotiated settlement.

@mogwai_poet@mastodon.social Also, if you want to help the moose out, feed and seed stores sell salt blocks for livestock that you can set up on a stump or so a safe distance from the road.

@mogwai_poet@mastodon.social I used to live in an area with wild horses which would occasionally make their way into urban areas. I once saw one of those programmable road work signs which said "CAUTION WILD HORSES IN ROAD", but didn't see any horses so I just figured the last horse to leave the road forgot to turn off the sign.

@mogwai_poet@mastodon.social Do you not put salt licking stones in your forrests? Here in Germany we do this for the deer, because they also need salt.
