@vaurora@mstdn.social I've been working to convert my own personal tech as well as that of my employer to a more sustainable Linux baseline. And the amount of projects explained as "I didn't like the other 52 options out there so I whipped one up" where calling the person a "maintainer" is a dramatic overstatement and you see Copilot or Claude as a Contributor is WILD.

@vaurora@mstdn.social Also, I'm running into ghost projects the other way... my favourite launcher got bought my some Firm That Buys Companies, and all but one dev got laid off, and then he left voluntarily, basically orphaning the project... this may or may not be due to AI but it's definitely got to do with tech bros with more dollars than sense, of which AI-as-we-know-it is a proper subset...

@vaurora@mstdn.social since CPAN we've built a world of online code sharing, but maybe we've hit a peak and need to have a cycle of practitioners maintaining the skills to just build what they need in-house, and become less dependent on individual developers building enormous projects based on massive dependency trees that they have no hope of understanding or maintaining if they needed to patch or fork them. You need a lot less "supply chain management" when the supply chain is me, myself and I. Just for clarity I don't mean that every webapp dev needs to write their OS kernel from scratch, or that _any_ code sharing is bad, but that it could well be limited to OS-provided APIs and parts that are too technical and fiddly for individuals (like encryption). I keep coming back to the phrase "bicycle for the mind", simple tools that I can use rather than all-encompassing frameworks that I have to learn to fit the problem into.

@vaurora@mstdn.social Silly response: Is "ghost" the right word for these? They weren't alive and then died-but-stuck-around. Instead, they're ... spirits that were forced into existence without ever being born. Is there a mythology that gave a name to that kind of thing? I have an LDS friend who mentioned that their theology distinguishes pre-mortal spirits from kinda-demons, and you can tell the difference by whether they agree to shake your hand and then fail. Since these projects do try and fail to interact with you, maybe they're demons.

I suspect it's paraphrased and you put it there as a bit of a joke, but . . . are these genAI "developers" actually asking for people to send them computers? I can't imagine the mindset that would have someone asking that. thank you for your time
