I need to remember that if I'm feeling down, a quick scroll down https://genders.wtf will make me laugh uncontrollably. Today it was "Salutation Scale" that got me. Thanks to @effy@social.effy.space for collecting these!

Help me out: do you know of a consulting group that gets called in to fix major problems in systems of computers and people? I'm trying to find groups that do this (preferably in Europe) so I can find out how they got started #AskFedi

Any SMART disk experts? I have a failing external USB drive (spinning rust kind) that I'm trying to get the data off. It has quite a lot of bad sectors that fail the CRC check. The read is going very slowly due to the retries on bad sectors and I'm currently estimating 1-2 weeks to read the whole thing. Is there a way to make this go faster, such as tuning the number of retries so it gives up faster on the bad sectors?

I Sold Out for $20 a Month and All I Got Was This Perfectly Generated Terraform I keep telling people that I'm excited for the LLM tools that are tuned for specific tasks; Claude Code is clearly one of them. I still don't get paid to do anything that it is good for, but this post is a good summary of the situation. https://matduggan.com/i-sold-out-for-200-a-month-and-all-i-got-was-this-perfectly-generated-terraform/

I DID IT!! I ordered a de-Googled Fairphone 6 with Murena e/os!!! My iPhone still works fine so I will have some time to make the transition. Nothing like a pending US invasion of Greenland to resume my migration off US big tech https://murena.com/shop/smartphones/brand-new/murena-fairphone-6/

Talking to a bunch of people in the European Commission today about why I emigrated from the US. I had far less of a political voice in the US than I do here in Europe, where I am not a citizen and can't vote. I have faith in the potential for the EU to take a different course and avoid falling into fascism or dictatorship, and I'm working extremely hard to make that hope a reality. #eupol

"In [the Unaccountability Machine], I diagnosed the problem of populism as being that people had got tired of not being listened to by the systems that governed them, and responded by using the only remaining communication channel they had. To take the title of my post on the US elections, the gap between governance and governed had got so big that the only signal that channel could carry was a scream. This was (and is) my theory of Trump, Farage, Meloni, etc etc." https://backofmind....

I'm now running into what I think of as "ghost" open source projects due to genAI. You'll search for a project that does X, find a public repo for a project that says it does X, it has a beautifully formatted README and well-organized code, but when you install it, it doesn't work. Then you find the note: "Written with the help of AI, never tested, please send me spare hardware so I can test it." ... ..... Dead internet.
