@hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange I appreciate you putting that into writing. I'm not going to lie, I'm utterly terrified. I mean, I count myself fortunate to have a fairly secure job for the moment, but what happens when that runs out? Where do I land after this job? Do I land after this job? Then there's also the question of what marketable skills do I have if I don't get into another similarly situated position, and I'm drawing blanks.

@hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange The only thing that breaks my heart more is knowing the trans community has seen infosec as one of the places where they are accepted enough and can potentially earn enough for their care needs, and that is also drying up. Even for those of us who have played the infosec game our whole career.

@hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange When I was the interviewer recently, fully 90% of the people I interviewed had no idea how anything worked beyond a very shallow surface level, and this was for a senior-level position. I can only imagine what it’s like for juniors and entry-level. (And so many of those candidates were *obviously* typing my questions into ChatGPT and reading its response back to me like I couldn’t see them on camera.) I don’t know where we’re going to get the next generation of practitioners.

@hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange if someone in the EU is looking for a Job and they are willing to learn - or already know - German, French and/or Italian, and are open to move: Check out jobs in the Swiss Government. https://jobs.admin.ch/ We're still looking for tons of different people in IT, even Juniors, and because the Swiss Market is eating up all of the professionals there's always a chance to get in. It's always more difficult when you are from abroad, but it still might help someone to find something

@hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange It's terrible to see. I feel sad for all the potential juniors and (future) seniors, and for those already in it getting the short end of the stick. I'm only still in the industry for the love of the game. I love what I'm doing and I'm infinitely thankful to be able to do it as a job. That's the only reason I content myself with shit pay, terrible hours, enforced "grind" and the constant need to prove myself just to keep my job. And I feel like employers know this, that the people in the industry love their job, so they don't have to give them any benefits. Add the overcrowded job market and it makes things even worse. I think you put it rather well. I hope that things might be better some day, but I don't know if that hope is not unfounded.

@hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange I know it’s not ideal for any candidate, but do you have any ideas about where to apply those skills in other fields? Since it shouldn’t be about the tools. (Without causing a rush on roles) Insurance? Fraud prevention? Trust & safety? eDisco? Low-volt security? Home/commercial, fire/life inspection? HVAC/BMS? Some of these trade roles could get exposure to BACnet well before a traditional SOC role.

I have friends who have been doing security work longer than me currently looking for full time employment, some of them getting close to a year out of work. My company has taken interns and I'm telling higher to stop bringing them in because they're all under the illusion that a) they can get hired with us straight away or b) they'll have job offers thrown at them left and right. Everything is fucked in this field right now, frankly.

@hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange It happens in every STEM field. The only way STEM is different from the performing arts, is that performing artists went in knowing it was going to be hell every day and then penniless death.
