Knee pain: fit has a lot to do with it, but how about pedaling style? Q6. Have you adjusted your pedaling style to avoid knee pain? Or do you attribute any knee pain to your pedaling style? Does "mashing" (pedaling with high force, at low rpm) contribute to it? #BikeNiteQ #BikeNite #BikeTooter #Cycling #MastoBikes cc @bikenite@fedigroups.social @DeltaWye@tiggi.es via @trouble@masto.ai

@ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social @DeltaWye@tiggi.es @trouble@masto.ai #BikeNite A6. Pedaling and knees are funny and a matter of preference. I keep my seat pretty high and try to keep my cadence up (it's still pretty slow: I'm a MTBer, not a roadie) because my knees used to hurt if I didn't. My husband thinks I shouldn't spin so much and would have more endurance if I pedaled more slowly. Which I think is weird because I'm the one with the slow-twitch sprinter build and he's the long stringy one who also has a bad knee.

@ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social @DeltaWye@tiggi.es @trouble@masto.ai A6. Thank You for asking this question and I will listen carefully what the community can recommend! At my age—over 60—this unfortunately becomes an issue. #bikenite

@ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social @DeltaWye@tiggi.es @trouble@masto.ai #bikenite #biketooter a5 I'm sure this is an "It depends." I am a masher of mashers because I"m all slow twitch and ... inherited the quads to do it. HOwever, in less than a mile on the Baby Bianchi with the only 26.6 mm seat tube Bernabe had, my knees -- and I have good knees, in swimming breastroke was the only thing I could catch up to anybody in because it was so kick dependent.... were beggging for mercy. Or at least were hurting and my knees don't hurt. I *do* throw that seat up high. I like power :)

@ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social @DeltaWye@tiggi.es @trouble@masto.ai A6. Keeping the pedals spinning at 60-90 rpms helps keep my knees from hurting unless they were bothering me earlier. Just mashing up a hill always makes me feel worse without it actually being any faster. The extra strain probably does go through your knees doing that. Foot position could also contribute I'd wager, and I do find myself moving my feet around sometimes. #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social @DeltaWye@tiggi.es @trouble@masto.ai #BikeNite A6 I had a bike fit to dial in the saddle distance from the pedals. And also positioned where the metal bits of my shoe clips into the pedal. The fit is by far the biggest improvement I had to avoid knee pain. I used to mash pedals but discovered I wasn't using gears correctly. The general rule of thumb is to aim for 90 rpm and land wherever feels comfortable. Some people land a little higher or lower. Higher rpm means less mash. It helped me.

#BikeNite A6: I absolutely do adjust my foot and leg position to avoid or overcome knee pain. I carry a neoprene knee brace in my regular kit, which often gets a lot of use at the start of the bike season. Usually rotating my foot out (toes away from the bike) provides some relief. After a month or so of cycling I can feel that my knee has regained strength, and I can do without the knee brace. But sometimes the knee pain comes back anyway... @ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social @DeltaWye@tiggi.es @trouble@masto.ai

@ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social @DeltaWye@tiggi.es @trouble@masto.ai A6: I haven't adjusted my pedaling style.. the only minor issues that I have had are back pain and pain in the left foot and only when I've ridden riding long distances.

  • @ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social @DeltaWye@tiggi.es @trouble@masto.ai A6. Good question. I’ve been fiddling with the seat height, and it seems to be helping the knees. I don’t “mash” much any more, but I used to get knee pain right away from doing the exact opposite: pulling up on the pedals with toe clips. #BikeNite
