I support small businesses as much as possible…but it’s really nice to know in advance if there’s anything I can actually eat there and if visitors have to walk into Mordor or climb 5,893 flights of steps in order to get there. 😂

@lydiaschoch@mastodon.social Also, it is helpful to have online menus. Is easier for people who are blind, people who have sensory processing disorder and who may find concentrating on a menu in a chaotic restaurant environment difficult, people with developmental disabilities who may need a little more time deciding, etc. And yes, accessibility information. Many times it has been that I've got to a restaurant and I need to climb up these weird stairs with no railing and that is a little terrifying!

@lydiaschoch@mastodon.social Whenever I see a business with a "website" on social media I assume they don't want my business, and move on to other options.

@lydiaschoch@mastodon.social I actually asked a restaurant owner about why they only exist online at the book of faces, and they said they wanted to be able to post weekly specials quickly. The past year or so since then, they have posted on that service once. Once. And it had nothing to do with specials or even menu items, it was closing for a repair.

@lydiaschoch@mastodon.social Exactly this. Having ditched Facebook I find it really frustrating that the only "website" for a cafe or restaurant is a Facebook account. But not, ever, tempted to go back on Facebook.

@lydiaschoch@mastodon.social And drop the banner picture/animation at the top of the page that takes up half the vertical space. Having to scroll down to see anything useful, content or site navigation elements is just plain annoying. There are usually many other companies offering the same products or services.

@lydiaschoch@mastodon.social I do hate the "FB is my website" option. I get 48 seconds of the "public" page, then I'm asked to log in to continue, which I can't do because like millions of other people, I am not on FB!

@lydiaschoch@mastodon.social I agree. A friend from decades ago posted her husband's obituary on FB and I found it ... annoying. Don't pay a local paper prior hedge fund manager and don't use oligarchs social bs media.

@lydiaschoch@mastodon.social Here in the Philippines Facebook IS the web. No small business here (and I mean absolutely none) can afford web hosting and design services, and Facebook made sure they gave people what they needed, for free (if you ignore all the surveillance of course). It's an appalling situation but until the Philippines drags its population out of poverty (and that will not happen any time soon), it will persist. If you tell small businesses here to stop using corporate social media for their online presence, they'll (rightly) laugh in your face.

@lydiaschoch@mastodon.social What's particularly shitty is when local art studios and arts organizations post on a platform that doesn't have their best interests at heart at all and is more interested in censoring anything they don't like. By contrast against, say, any of the Fediverse platforms where that type of censorship really isn't much of an issue. I mean, if I were running something like that, I'd rather put up a Mastodon, Friendica, and Pixelfed page than a Twitter, FB, and IG page and not have to worry about an actively hostile megacorp striking my shit for any reason they can make up.

I'd even more happily visit one that *was* designed in the 1990s than some of these modern ones that look thrown together using some kind of site builder where the dynamic-ness undermines them. (But that's still a serious step up from using Facebook as a home rather than a tool.)

@lydiaschoch@mastodon.social Even if small business don’t want to spend time and money to put up a webpage (which is hard for some people) - put your info on a platform we don’t have to sign up for to view. You can still see business info on google and yelp without having to create an account. Bare minimum and is way better for visibility than social media. Every map program and search engine references these.

@lydiaschoch@mastodon.social it's also incredible how many small businesses *do* have websites, that look relatively modern... But don't say anywhere on them what city they are based in. "Our qualified staff offer these services" yes, but are you 2,000kms away from me or not?

@astigg1@mastodon.nl 2026-06-19 17:56
@lydiaschoch@mastodon.social I agree, I like it when businesses and organisations have a website. Websites are useful! Much better than a Facebook page! I don't agree with some people in this thread saying building a simple website is easy. I'm sure it's easy *for you*, you are computer people. I have a small business with a simple website and I had a website builder build it. I'm computer literate enough to maintain and update it myself, but not to build it. It would have taken me twice as long as her to make something looking not half as good. So yes, businesses should have websites, and this works best if website builders build them, because website building takes special skills.
