Opened a can of evaporated milk for a recipe. The contents were a deep yellow colour that seemed suspicious, so I searched on the internet "what colour should evaporated milk be?" Page after page (I stopped scrolling at about 60 results) of near-identical AI generated useless websites, each with paragraph after paragraph of "What is evaporated milk? What do you use it for? What are the scientific reasons for its colour?" None just with a photo saying "if your milk look...

Looking into some #rstats code attached to a paper. The code won't run now, because it relies on a package that has been archived (removed) from CRAN. This package had been around for over a decade, with updates over the years. Looking into why it was removed, it appears that one of the package examples required downloading a GeoTIFF file from a website. It seems that, at the time CRAN tried to run and test this code, the server hosting that file happened to have an expired SSL cert...

I need to be very clear, that the push towards "vibe coding" - that is, deliberately deskilling people - is because AI code assistants are an (increasingly expensive) subscription service. If you know how to code, you can just write Python, C, Java, R, PHP, whatever for free and make things. You may not own the tools of production, but at least you're not renting them. If you have been deskilled so you only know how to vibe code, you will be paying for that privilege...

Confessional rant incoming; I spent a significant amount of the last two days messing around with Copilot (as recommended and encouraged by my employer), and the sum total is that I have been gaslit for about 6 hours and have learned very little of use. I really think I might post the logs somewhere, except they are very tedious and boring. Broadly; yesterday, I have a very large (~168gb per file) spatial data-cube I want to do some calculations on. Too large to fit in memory, and the proces...
