Can't wait for everyone's reaction when they realise the under 16 social media ban isn't for the children. It's for everyone to submit their IDs and be monitored. Sorry to break the news if you were hoping for something else.

Just to clarify if anyone doesn't grasp it, this was with regards to the recent information about the social media ban for under 16s in the UK. Keir Starmer announced plans for Spring 2027 on 15th June 2026.

@jbjrkng@hachyderm.io "Some social media are dangerous and harmful for children, have really dodgy practices, cannot be trusted not to track them and are truly horrible. So we FORCE them to scan your IDs and keep hold of it"

  • @jbjrkng@hachyderm.io I have a sneaking suspicion it's a little simpler than even that. I think Meta and the others pushed their politicians into doing this because they want to become the sole gateways to the Internet. Most places can't really afford to pay the ID handlers and would have to shut down or at least not allow people from crazed overzealous countries to access their sites. Meta, of course, has the money and would make even more if they could finally force everyone to hand over their IDs.

@jbjrkng@hachyderm.io Sitting here in #USA I can’t claim to know or understand #UKpol or #UK #elections very well. (But John Oliver gave a crash course of the insanity last night. #HBO soon to be another Bond-villain Ellison property 😠. ) I am a fan of the film “V for Vendetta”, and it seems, from my American long distance view, that the UK is inching toward the cartoonishly evil fascist regime from V (but in real-life dreadfully serious).

@jbjrkng@hachyderm.io I have said before, this will continue until some politicians social media is hacked via age related id and it is revealed that they either take or deal drugs, are implicated in some sex scandal or caught with teir hands in the till. It wil the be "Oh we didn’t think this would happen lets reverse it (too late)"

@jbjrkng@mastodon.social Absolutely. Everything begins with thinks like that. For example, in Russia it began 14 years ago with the law to protect children from harmful information. You can read there, my English is not so good to explain that https://wilmap.stanford.edu/entries/federal-law-no-139-fz-blacklist-law

@jbjrkng@hachyderm.io It won't affect me. I won't do it. I've learned to stop pushing back at the enshittification of customer service. I take problems put in my way like queues, overcomplicated verification, no immediate place to reject cookies, block on ad blocker, popups before I've even read a word. You get the drift. I take them all as a sign I'm not welcome on your website. There's always an alternative. Don't at me with bs that there is no alternative to social media. You're using it.

@jbjrkng@hachyderm.io if only somebody told them! Oh no.... wait... we did. So now we have age verification systems that will track everybody but also give social media businesses earning billions a get-out clause of "well they shouldn't have been using us anyway" when they publish harmful content that hurts somebody.
