Yo #Database nerds! Quick question - would approx 8 seconds be a reasonable transaction time when returning 5 million rows of a single column over a VPN connection ? Standalone Windows Server VM (ew), spinning rust SAS drives , generally well performing all round. Loads of ram and cores, but guess what... it's SQLExpress so no matter what I give it it won't be used. I think 8 seconds is OK.... I'm right, right? First experience with #NixOS designing a hardware setup for a client's till system. Basically I just need a PC that will start up predictably, with recovery processes, and be reconfigured if necessary, all with the underlying control that those pesky users can't go messing around with things. You know what, I don't think I could ever use it as my daily driver, but NixOS with a tiling window manager and web browser configured to run in kiosk mode and only to one URL seems to work nice...

#FreeBSD folk - calling for your help! Upgrading a server with broadcom NICs to 15.0-RELEASE causes VNET jails to stop resolving DNS names. Even trying direct drill freebsd.org fails. Can't even resolve local names. Pinging IPs - fine. Just no DNS resolution. Rolling back to 14.3 the jails work again. Putting a different brand NIC in (i.e. Intel) also resolves the problem. Seems to be a Broadcom only issue. Fresh 15.0-RELEASE install has the same issue too. I've had a forum discussion...
