I worked with these researchers and NOAA back in the 2000s, so I know how vital this information is to accurate forecasting. This is a huge step backwards for marine science and oceanography.

@superflippy@mastodon.xyz I wouldn't be surprised if we learned that the Trump administration did this petty destructive thing simply because someone said the words you've just said, more or less. "Sir, we will lose the ability to accurately track marine weather." Imagine the torrent of blather and anger and defiance that would result from simply...stating the truth.

@superflippy@mastodon.xyz Is this preparatory action to enable vandals to mine the sea floor? Monitoring devices would be very much in the way.

@superflippy@mastodon.xyz ...the decision to dismantle the network, known as the Ocean Observatories Initiative, “aligns with N.S.F.’s wider strategy to have a nimbler approach to prioritizing support for evolving scientific priorities and emerging technologies as well as a deliberate approach to smart life cycle management within its portfolio of research infrastructure.” What is this slop answer, what the hell does that mean in human language?!?

@superflippy@mastodon.xyz Why would they seek to dismantle the system rather than simply let it rot by cutting the funding? If cost is the issue here, isn't it cheaper to just let it be? I doubt it's ecological sentiment as they haven't really shown this is their concern. One explanation could be that they just want to prevent further gathering of evidence for climate change. #climatechange

@superflippy@mastodon.xyz thanks for sharing a link around the pay wall. Any governing body being anti-science has always been a massive red flag for me. Glad to see such a simple test still works. At the same time I have to wonder what the real motivation is. For the USA the reported budget is a rounding error. Why is the American government trying to ensure that the data cannot be collected by going so far as to remove the instrumentation completely? Are thousands of bald eagles flying into them every year?

@superflippy@mastodon.xyz > Michael England, a spokesman for the National Science Foundation, said the decision to dismantle the network [...] “aligns with N.S.F.’s wider strategy to have a nimbler approach to prioritizing support for evolving scientific priorities and emerging technologies as well as a deliberate approach to smart life cycle management within its portfolio of research infrastructure.” Wow, what a word salad with zero substance. "Prioritising support for evolving scientific priorities"?
