@dangoodin@infosec.exchange Fiio makes some pretty good ones. I just recently bought a Snowsky Disc, and after a firmware update, I love the thing. I also have an open source Tangara that's a bit less stable, but still has potential.

@dangoodin@infosec.exchange I'm still using my refurbished Sansa Clip from like 15 years ago and it's a champ. Not sure what features you're looking for but it works well as an offline music player. For streaming I use Subsonic app and my Nextcloud server.

@dangoodin@infosec.exchange the innioasis y1 had a hack to run rockbox on it for that fake classic ipod feel. otherwise most DAPs are just android boxes. there's a small number like the AP80 that are not but they tend to have stupid limitations. i have the Y1 and a HyBee M300. the 300 is nice because i could load syncthing and antennapod on it with a big ole memory stick. but with google's paternalism this year i'm not sure how their lockdown grab is going to affect offbrand stuff like this :comfyglare:

@dangoodin@infosec.exchange An old smartphone that's no longer used for calling gives you a zero cost option. If you delete unnecessary apps/pics/downloads, you might get a ton of music space. Plenty of MP3 apps to choose from, Bluetooth and WiFi options, tethering for easy up/downloading, and it's already a familiar device. Plus, you also get an emergency 911 phone!

@dangoodin@infosec.exchange always set a price range before looking things like this up TempoTec makes some decent entry level players, and so does Hiby. Prices climb quickly after that, but the quality does too. (Things to keep an eye on are how big of a microsd you can use, if it is just an Android device with a decent DAC as so many are.)

@dangoodin@infosec.exchange I have an old Sansa Clip + that I use. The factory codec is bad, as the frequencies of the sounds are subtly wrong, so I flashed it and installed linux on it, with the added benefit of having flac support. Now I'm happy with the sound quality. I hope this helps...

@dangoodin@infosec.exchange they are! I use a Shanling M0 Pro with a 2TB MicroSD card in it, about 1.2TB full of FLACs. (There's a newer model, the M0 Pura, but it's a workaround for short supply of the DAC chips in the M0 Pro and has worse battery life.) The Hiby R1 is a good, cheap entry level player. The FiiO/Snowsky Echo Nano just launched and it's not great but it's cheap and, frankly, adorable. Short on battery life though. And of course the Tangara is beloved of many fediverse nerds!!

@dangoodin@infosec.exchange I had a cowon d2 back in the day and loved it, and it worked great under Linux, which in 2006 was a BigDeal™ Anyway they've still got a website but it looks like none of their products are still available 😕 The better quality ones available eg from Amazon will be the ones that support FLAC, AAC and OGG, and ideally just show up as a drive to your PC, or take a MicroSD card. The brands are all weird names. Also Sony still makes a android powered walkman

@dangoodin@infosec.exchange I see this got a lot of answers, but why wouldn't you just use your phone? If you're worried about battery just bring a powerbank. Is there something specific you want like wired headphones? Nostalgia? I had the first MP3 playing phone in 2000 and never looked back.

@dangoodin@infosec.exchange smartphones largely killed the market, modern portable media players tend to be more premium models that support audiophile high-resolution/lossless formats like FLAC and can have terabytes of capacity, as well as exotic features like balanced audio outputs and enough power to drive full-sized headphones. At the top you have a South Korean company with the faux-Germanic named Astell & Kern, at more reasonable price points, the likes of Fiio. Sony still makes players under the Walkman brand. Then there is a bewildering variety of Chinese brands like Shanling, HiBy, iBasso, and Hidizs. Most of these don't handle Classical music properly, as they don't have the ability to browse by composer the way my old iPod did, or my now discontinued Onkyo DP-X1. The AI-driven RAMpocalypose and SSD-pocalypose will probably kill the affordable end of the market.
