@jcrabapple@dmv.community This is a particularly good one.

Sometimes it's funny how wrong software gets things. Setting up this new phone, Google Contacts suggested that I add some people to my favorites for quick contact access. One of the four suggestions was my grandmother, who has been dead for four years. At the very least, Google should probably know that I haven't been texting her very much lately.

Hey there, it's us! Massive smartphone corporation! We made our phone even bigger and less friendly for real, functional human hands this year because we know you love when we do that. It's also $100 more expensive this year because that size isn't free. Still not enough room to fit a headphone jack, though.

Some news: I'm ditching Pixel devices. Despite running GrapheneOS, which I love using, the hardware itself really doesn't improve year over year. The Tensor series has been really disappointing for a few years now, and aside from the camera, I'm not sure that Pixel phones are the best at anything at all. They're built for AI and not much else. I'll be moving to a (debloated) Galaxy S26 Ultra. Despite also being heavy on AI, at least it'll give me enough power to have som...

I've missed wearing a little smart thing on my wrist, but all I ever use them for is phone notifications, alarms, and counting steps. And so I couldn't really justify buying something like a Pixel Watch or Galaxy Watch or whatever. So I started looking into alternatives. I ended up spending only about $50 on a Xiaomi Smart Band 10. It's a weird looking device compared to most others, which I like. Gets crazy 21 day battery life because it runs an RTOS instead of Android Wear. And th...

I just moved my gaming PC upstairs to my living room so that I can use it a bit more like a game console. Gaming at 4K on a 4K TV is genuinely nuts. Shame no one will ever be able to afford anything like this ever again, including me.

On Android I was using Voyager for Lemmy for a long while, but I've just swapped over to Summit and it's been awesome so far. https://github.com/idunnololz/summit

Saw the new Spider-Man movie with @BaSinghSe@infosec.exchange. Pretty good, but as a pro tip, bringing an infant to an opening day Marvel movie has the chance of ruining the experience for a lot of other people.

Using your phone with a telescopic game controller has gotten insanely good. In particular, GameNative for Android is witchcraft. My phone's GPU sucks chunks and GameNative is still in its early days but I can still already run 2D and light 3D titles.

I have no idea what Google is doing because Gemini 3 was probably the best AI model at the end of last year and now with Gemini 3.6 I feel like it actually went backwards and it gets most things noticeably wrong. Which is probably not great for a company that boasts intelligence.

In the Imagination pavilion at Epcot, there's a little booth at the end of the ride that lets you take photos on a green screen and inserts you into various scenes. Probably for too much money. You can tell it's been ignored for a long while because it still lets you take a photo in front of the Fountain of Nations, which was torn out over six years ago.

Confession: I play most PC games on a laptop with a touchpad. I have since I was 13 and that's how I got used to it. If a game requires me to hold down a right click or use a middle click in any way, I need to either remap it or not play that game.

It's funny that so many gaming brands (ex: Asus ROG) are pivoting to become gaming AI brands. As if anyone who plays video games cares about how well their machine performs AI tasks. These companies are just completely deaf to reality.

Every time I go to play a video game only to have to install a launcher and create an account to do so, I end up more disappointed and usually just play a retro game instead.

The coolest thing that you can do right now is bypass the price increases of hardware companies and buy something used. Nvidia just released their 50 series GPUs, so people are looking to get rid of anything with a 40 series GPU in it despite the fact that they're perfectly good. Case in point, I just got myself a Zephyrus G14 with an RTX 4090 in it from 2023 for an absolute steal. Lightly used, taken care of, and within the margin of error of an RTX 5080 for most game titles. Plus it's...

I love my Steam Deck, but I reeeally wish I'd timed my purchase right to get a white one. It sort of sucks that that was a “limited release." Again, tech should come in more colors.

Some bad news: I’m going to need to send my StarFighter in to Star Labs to get it fixed up after a bad firmware update. Apparently the update itself is totally fine, so we don’t know what happened just yet. Props to them for being willing to do this so quickly and easily. They were also willing to send me some hardware that would let me open up the laptop and flash the firmware myself, but it looks like a bit much for me.

Internet, what are your favorite modern 3D platformer games? I was always a huge fan of Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie. I haven’t seen anything like them that caught my attention since the early 2000s. I did try Yooka-Laylee, which was decent. What else is there? #gaming
