What I'll do is, I'll write down my thoughts and your input so far in a slightly longer form and then I'm happy to start talking. My guess is that a phase of upfront research would be good (mostly non-technical) before it makes sense to think about the actual setup. If you've favourited my original message, I'd be happy to hear from you what you'd think would be a good way/medium to start the conversations.

@halfbyte@ruby.social Isn't there even a EU form of a coop? 🤔 It might be worth trying to figure out if SMBs would be interested in such a model. Being a member (not shareholder, I think this is wrong term, but IANAL) typically grants equal rights, regardless how many coop shares they have. Which might be seen as a big advantage to some, but to others it might be quite off-putting. I personally think, for commercial hosting, a coop is a much better model, compared to an association (Verein).

@halfbyte@ruby.social I'm personally interested in seeing something like this happen - had only recently realised the limitation on Codeberg not allowing closed-source projects (but also, hadn't gotten around to seriously migrating any private repos there yet anyway). If you went with Forgejo, then I'd also love to see/pay for shared actions runners hosting as well. I have been toying with sharing something along those lines already, especially now that Forgejo v15 I think has some API endpoints to track runner usage - which in turn could help determine some level of auto-scaling or at least reporting on runner availability.

@halfbyte@ruby.social With Radicle, members of your coop would agree to mutually seed their repositories. The peer-to-peer architecture makes it easy to participate. For practical reasons you would need a few nodes with relatively overlapping uptime, like shifts with handovers, but the resource requirements are low. You can run a Radicle node on a Raspberry Pi, and certainly as a daemon on your main machine. It is all FOSS. Check it out at https://radicle.dev
