I’m surely not the first to come to this realisation, but the LLM industrial complex is to tech-life what MAGA is to politics: erode any and all trust in established institutions, people and practices for the benefit of the very few and worst people on the planet in the (poor) guise of freedom.

This is an absolutely wild story: - a German inventor, unrelated to the defence industry, registers a patent - the German military immediately classifies its contents as security related, including potentially endangering NATO’s nuclear deterrence, and forbids the inventor to discuss the patent with anyone - a little while later, the patent office asks if he used any GenAI tooling to create the patent: he did - the classification is immediately dropped as there is no more guarantee that th...

Hey all, I have a big favour to ask. At the beginning of the week, a large client that we had 100% expected to get started with a large project this month has dropped out at the most inconvenient time for us. My team at @neighbourhoodie@toot.berlin and I are looking for any and all projects we might be able to help with, the sooner the better. We are really good at turning manual and/or analogue processes into digital ones, especially, but not limited to, if parts of the process need to work...

New hobby: counting folks coming out the other end of going full AI hype posting “hard learned insights” that we sceptics told them three years ago when we started losing them to the big brainwash. I’m glad they’re making it out of the cult, but man.

Yes, everyone and their grandma have linked to the latest Technical Connections video. I just watched it too and indeed learned a few nice things about renewable energy thay I did not know or hadn’t realised yet. But that’s not why this video is outstanding. I’m not going to spoil this for you. Part way through I just loudly applauded alone in my hotel room. Yes it is long, it’s fine watching at 1.3x or a bit more, but it is absolutely worth your time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtQ9nt2Z...

This includes spare parts when doing self-repair at a communal repair cafe. https://www.rbb24.de/panorama/beitrag/2024/09/berlin-senat-reparatur-bonus-elektroschrott.html

My talk from this year’s local-first conf in Berlin is out now. 15 Years of Local First: A Best-Of Report from the Field: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_x0kmL-AZ00 It’s a cheeky reference to the fact that LF has only been around since 2019 and we are doing very similar things since the early 2010s that we were calling offline-first. But, importantly, it was thrilling to see 450 people being very receptive about the things we had to share and being excited for what we can bring to this new c...

We are at smart people saying “summarising complex medical documents with an LLM is a good use-case”. That’s the same LLMs that cannot correctly summarise the news without threatening international relations. Just in case you want to know where the Overton window is on AI. I’m just glad public perception is holding steady for the time being.
