Yeah, GNOME is very much political at this point. Probably always was, the result of that though is that they will do things their way and their users will be happy about it. This is part of a broader politicisation of the FOSS community that I've observed lately where projects are getting co-oped by political activists that steer to the project in a particular direction with no regard to external output. @mcdanlj@social.makerforums.info

@mcdanlj lol. I take pains to deliberately disable middle click on my linux laptop. It seems to reappear after updates though

@mcdanlj That setting has existed for nearly 15 years. I don't think it's going away any time soon.

@mcdanlj I agree. The MR has bad attitude all over it. A naive “all old stuff bad” kind of vibe. This is classic junior to mid level engineer behavior. It’s understandable, but the people at GNOME making these decisions should have outgrown that by now. At least add it to the release notes ffs. The lack of respect is irritating.

@mcdanlj I have switched over to the niri window manager already, but that one did annoy me as I got things going. Bookmarked! (niri doesn't do that)

@mcdanlj At least it’s a prominent setting option in gnome-tweaks. Nevertheless took me way too long to realise why middle click was broken.

@mcdanlj MIddle click is for pasting. How do you paste now?

@mcdanlj The writing was on the wall with the release of GNOME 3, which had a ton of commonly used functionality removed because the GNOME developers better than the users, vs GNOME 1 and 2 having been made to operate as users wanted. I jumped ship to MATE as soon as was possible. I don't want a desktop environment that tells me what I want is wrong.

@mcdanlj What's a middle click?

@mcdanlj that little kerfuffle over the attitude was one of the later straws in the pile which ultimately broke this camel's back; I already didn't use GNOME except when I can't avoid it, but now I've started making an effort to drop apps with GNOMEified UI and GTK apps in general in favor of others where there's an equivalent available. if I'm gonna be contributing in any way (such as bug reports), I want my contribution to go toward building a healthy non-GNOME, non-GTK ecosystem.

@mcdanlj I am torn between my immense hatred for Gnome's idiotifying mannerisms, and my immense hatred for the middle-moyse-button paste functionality.

@i@toot.pouyan.net 2026-04-29 06:11
@mcdanlj if I'm not mistaken, you can enable it in GNOME tweaks.

@mcdanlj Thanks! I'm apparently one of the nobodies who uses it quite a lot

@mcdanlj @sjvn There is a new breed of arrogant developers in this world and I have made it my life's goal to bombard their ivory towers with issues, tickets, and jiras. All malevolent code patterns start with them and their disdain for fellow human beings.
