Yeah, GNOME is very much political at this point. Probably always was, the result of that though is that they will do things their way and their users will be happy about it.
This is part of a broader politicisation of the FOSS community that I've observed lately where projects are getting co-oped by political activists that steer to the project in a particular direction with no regard to external output.
