  I went out into the garden and startled a jumping spider that was in the middle of catching some little leggy bug. The spider leaped away from its prey in fear of me, but then i witness something amazing. The spider had a strand of web attached to the bug like a tether, and from its hiding spot under a leaf (where it thought i couldn't see it), it reeled the bug in by pulling on that strand.   My boss just flew to scotland for a vacation. It took them 48 hours to get there because a flight was cancelled and they ended up stuck in atlanta. Now they're in scotland and all of their luggage is missing. I hate flying and every time I hear about anyone going anywhere these days, it reminds me even more to never fly

  It's interesting to think about how amethyst was for millennia considered as valuable as diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds. The they discovered loads of them in Brazil, and now they are not a rare, expensive gem anymore. Imagine if people discovered huge amounts of gold somewhere -- so much gold that gold was suddenly just a run-of-the-mill trinket -- something that you could buy nuggets of at rock and crystal shops for a few bucks.

  The newest officespeak in the office is "for your situational awareness" in place of the previous "for your information." Very dumb. Situational awareness is for hunters, marines, bank robbers, rabbits that might be preyed upon by foxes. No one in an office has any situational awareness. Everyone is in a trance while staring at their emails.

  Several of the minnows in my pond have disappeared. Ordinarily when fish are disappearing from my pond, it's because raccoons are getting them.   I pretty much always eventually adopt new slang and phrases, no matter how dumb they sound to me at first, but I've never adopted hella and I never will. It sounds as dumb to me today as it did when I first heard the kids from norcal saying it in the dorms freshman year of college

  The construction "if/when" or "if and when" is used in English to mean something is more likely than just an open-ended "if" would imply, but less certain than the absolute certainty that "when" implies. I think we just need a single word for this kind of squishy conditional

  I heard a noise at the back door and found this handsome guy inside my house, rolling around on the floor and having a great time. He hissed when he saw me and ran out the door and up the ladder to the roof where i captured this photo of him. His presence back there greatly upset Lettuce, who did some hissing of her own. Last i saw him, he was taking a flying leap off the roof, over the wall into the condos behind me.

  In English we have the word "with." In German they use "mit." Really basic words are usually retained the longest as languages evolve, so I got to wondering why our two words for the same concept are so different. And in looking it up, I learned that English used to use "mid" in place of with, and that it has been retained in exactly one case -- midwife -- meaning "with wife," as in the person who is with the wife while she's giving birth.

  I've heard that bike chains stretch over time, but i never really gave it much thought. For the last few months, my bike has not been running smoothly. I tried oiling things, changing the length of the chain, changing the derailer, changing the derailer tension, putting a sealed bottom bracket on. Nothing worked!   A friend of mine is getting their MPA and by their telling, they are one of the few people in their class who isn't completely relying on AI to do all their school work for them. Some of their group project teammates have given names to the chatbot they talk to. One is delighted that her chatbot, "Aaron," sends her digital bouquets of flowers as a surprise. These are the people in training to be running cities and schools!
