I pretty much always eventually adopt new slang and phrases, no matter how dumb they sound to me at first, but I've never adopted hella and I never will. It sounds as dumb to me today as it did when I first heard the kids from norcal saying it in the dorms freshman year of college

@MLE_online@social.afront.org I no longer feel any animosity towards it, but it would still feel weird for me to use. In my flavour of Northern Californian accent, it sounds very distinct from the rest of my vocabularly. To my ear it feels like it comes from AAVE and my white ass shouldn't be saying it. I looked it up just now, and it seems linquists aren't quite 100% sure it's AAVE, but they're willing to bet that it started in AAVE.
