@Popehat That's impressively disgusting. Hope your motion succeeds. That poor family.

@Popehat super duper gross. Good luck, I hope you prevail

@Popehat holy fucking shit, fuck that guy. Its not honorable (or even legal?) but I'd love for you to charge 10x your normal rate, assuming attorney fees are awarded. Fucking asshole.

@adron@metalhead.club 2023-11-20 20:41
@Popehat that is disgusting. Making the mistake in the first place but then going on in this holier than thought privileged way. I can only hope date is horrible for scum like that. Just unacceptable behavior on that dude’s behalf.

@Popehat Thank you for posting this on Mastodon. I am so glad you are representing this woman.

@Popehat “The plaintiff would like to be known as the kind of person who kills others through inexcusably poor and reckless driving, but not, Your Honor, as a drunkard. These groundless allegations of immoderate tippling have severely tarnished his reputation in the vehicular homicide community, and we feel justified in asking for exemplary damages.”

@atthenius@fediscience.org 2023-11-20 20:53
@Popehat @blogdiva I guess in some states it’s only a wrist slap worthy misdemeanor for killing someone by car unless you are intoxicated or leave the scene of the crash or if there are minors involved. Why are our laws such that it’s a different level of crime to drive while drunk versus driving sober at high speed? Aren’t you willfully endangering others? is there a state by state breakdown of those laws. In nyc it seems that people get killed by car and have no justice.

@artemesia@techhub.social 2023-11-20 20:54
@Popehat I'm glad you're taking on this case; keep us posted. It's worth pointing out that 20-year-old Vargas almost certainly didn't come up with this strategy on his own.
-
@t_slider@mas.to 2023-11-20 20:55
@Popehat this was quite outrageous. The only (minimal) grace is the he did not sue the victim’ family over damaging his car.

@estranged@indieweb.social 2023-11-20 20:58
@Popehat Well done sir.

@lampsofgold@veoh.social 2023-11-20 21:02
@Popehat unbelievable, and the demand to oppose prosecution is just sick
-

@Popehat absolutely horrible. I hope that person loses and continues losing.

@kims@mas.to 2023-11-20 21:04
@Popehat Is there a mandatory freshman class at Stanford that teaches male students that in no way are they ever accountable for their behavior, and any criticism of them is a crime? And is it taught by some chance by Persky or the Bankman-Frieds? I know it's your alma mater but I swear there's something in the Palo Alto water...
-
@lawyerjsd@mastodon.social 2023-11-20 21:05
@Popehat What an absolute piece of shit. Of course, his being a piece of shit is now a matter of public record.
-
@knittedallie@mstdn.ca 2023-11-20 21:08
@Popehat that poor family! My heart goes out to them. What an absolutely despicable lawsuit.

@Popehat Thank you for taking the case, and for staying somewhat active here on Mastodon 😉

@Popehat wow. King Vanga sure sounds like a terrible human being.

@Popehat Has anyone forwarded this article to the enforcers of the Stanford U Honor Code? It seems like Varga's action (filing a suit) is a second violation. Perhaps if we suggested he be expelled... https://communitystandards.stanford.edu/policies-guidance/honor-code

@Popehat hoo boy, this is gonna be a doozy.

@Popehat hey welcome back.
-
@haui@mastodon.giftedmc.com 2023-11-20 21:28
@Popehat I think there should be 18 months of jailtime just for emotionally abusing his victims‘ family members.
-
@glasspusher@beige.party 2023-11-20 21:31
@Popehat may the Streisand Effect™ follow him until he repents
-
@glasspusher@beige.party 2023-11-20 21:32
@Popehat Stanford. This is my shocked face.
-
@Oggie@woof.group 2023-11-20 21:38
@Popehat Genuinely I thought this was a hyperbolic example of some clear insanity, that you were then going to map to a clearly wrong lawsuit, demonstrating the absurdity. It wasn't until I was halfway in the article that I realized this was actually what is going on.
-
@Mikal@sfba.social 2023-11-20 21:39
@Popehat Sounds like a slam dunk against that monster. Hope it is. It's going to make him look bad in any criminal prosecution. It will be kind of hard for him to be believably contrite at sentencing.
-
@WildEyedBoyFromFreecloud@masto.ai 2023-11-20 21:40
@Popehat I could only read 0art of the article. WTAF!
-
@karlauerbach@sfba.social 2023-11-20 21:54
@Popehat One can be thankful, at least, that California, unlike some of our antediluvian states, has an anti-SLAPP law
-
@LibrationPointThree@ioc.exchange 2023-11-20 22:05
@Popehat
-
@forpeterssake@mastodon.xyz 2023-11-20 22:13
@Popehat Plenty of condemnation for King Vanga, which is warranted, but not enough for his firm and his counsel, who drafted and filed the SLAPP suit even though they know better. (Maybe they have some strongly-worded warning letter in their file of the potential consequences, just to cover their butts. Lawyers are pretty good at that. But I would never hire or recommend a firm that filed an action like this.)
-
@podkaynelives@universeodon.com 2023-11-20 22:18
@Popehat How DARE they disparage his good name 🤬 by mentioning he killed their family members. 🙄Three cheers for Ken for standing up to loathsome creatures like Mr.Vanga.
-
@rjblaskiewicz@mstdn.social 2023-11-20 22:31
@Popehat Oh, that's pretty gross. Ugh.
-
@objectinspace@freeradical.zone 2023-11-20 22:49
@Popehat Wow, what a shitbird. With any luck he'lll be headed to a place where he can no longer hurt any more people.
-
@skip_lacaze@sfba.social 2023-11-20 23:18
@Popehat Isn’t this email improper? It seems like extortion: ‘Plaintiff’s counsel sent Mrs. Juarez an email offering to drop the lawsuit if Ms. Juarez agreed “not to make or publish any disparaging statements about Mr. Vanga in the future” and “not to encourage the criminal prosecution of Mr. Vanga, including by communicating with government officers or protesting at any conference, hearing, or trial involving Mr. Vanga.” ‘
-
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com 2023-11-20 23:25
@Popehat holy shit that is crazy! What an asshole! Glad the family has good representation, but they shouldn't need a lawyer. Just wow.

@SpaceLifeForm@infosec.exchange 2023-11-20 23:35
@Popehat I suspect the dude was wired on crack or meth. I have seen this before. One day, on highway (55 mph zone), this guy blew by me at minimum 80mph in heavy traffic. 'Oh shit' I thought, this idiot is going to cause an accident. Sure enough, a mile later. This idiot had skidded across most of the lanes, hit a barrier wall on the right, and then skidded back across (3 lanes), and hit the center median. I could see the skid marks. Plenty of cars involved, but looked like no serious injuries, the other cars made it to the shoulders. As I crept past (within feet), the dude was out of his car screaming that he could not believe what happened. I can. He was wired. You do not go 80 mph in a 55 mph zone during rush hour. Not a good idea even if you are sober.
