Welcome to my tiny corner of the internet! I'm an accessibility specialist for WhatsApp, which is about the least exciting thing about me. I also play video games--while blind! I hosted a politics podcast with Matt Cooper called _The Game Is Rigged_ from 2017-2018. I've produced and acted in the Worm full-cast Audiobook project. I host a weekly show called Thoughtfood on Venom.FM from 12 to 3 PM PST on Sundays. I also sing and play drums. I'm even a snappy dresser--though this is disputed!

@vick21 @Tamasg @nolan@venera.social It waits about a second after you finish to take the picture, that takes another second or so, then it sends it up to the cloud and you get an answer back. That is usually about 2-5 seconds in my experience. So around 4-7 seconds average. Which, again, I'm on pretty fast wifi at home, actual network conditions in the wild may varry etc. But very reasonable I think!

@lulu_bear Some fediverse clients have an option to remove emojis from user names. Enafore does, for instance. Might be worth checking. If not, consider bugging whoever maintains the apps that you use. This avenue might be more successful than shaming people into changing their cultural norms to fit yours.

@vick21 @Tamasg @nolan@venera.social Totally okay! I don't know the answer the battery life question because I haven't had a need to leave them on for long periods. I think though that the glasses battery lasts a few hours on standby, or probably about an hour or two at most if you are doing something intensive like a WhatsApp video call. Otherwise it will power itself down pretty quickly. The case battery has up to 32 hours IIRC.

@vick21 @Tamasg @nolan@venera.social As for your second question: I'll be honest--I have been struggling to find a good use case for them. But I think that is less because they aren't useful, and more because I spend most of my time at home. I've adapted my environment to work around the need for a device like this. I'd say they are better at anything you would use the aftershocks for, + a camera. If you are walking around a lot or in an unfamiliar environment, th...

@nolan@venera.social @vick21 @Tamasg You invoke MetaAI from the touch pad or a hotword. From there you can ask "what am I looking at?" it will take the picture and describe it. Or you can take the picture with the button and then ask Meta to describe it. You can also ask MetaAI most of the stuff you would normally ask an assistant, though its app support is pretty limited. It won't fall back to another assistant, but if you hotword Google/ALexa/Siri from the phone micro...

@nolan@venera.social @vick21 @Tamasg If you have a specific task in mind I can tell you whether it will or won't work. Most of what it won't do involves trying to get it to launch or do something in an app that is not Meta. If you ask music you get Apple music or Spotify, you can't call with Facetime/Google Duo, that kind of thing. But you can launch those actions from the phone and they will use the glasses speaker/microphone because that is how bluetooth works.

@nolan@venera.social @vick21 @Tamasg So if you are using Maps (or hopefully something better) for turn-by-turn navigation, you can start it on the phone, put on the glasses, the phone stays in your pocket and you get the instructions without your ears being covered. While it's doing that you can ask the AI to take pictures and describe where you are at to help get you un-lost. I certainly wouldn't rely on it for street crossings! And I would like to see better app integrations. B...

@nolan@venera.social @vick21 @Tamasg No worries! Yeah I usually ask "what am I looking at" It takes the picture and describes it in one step. I think that is the default use case. If you take a picture and then say something like "describe this picture," that will work for the most recent one, but if you wait about a minute between taking the picture and asking for a description, it will forget about the photo and make you take a new one.

@nolan@venera.social @vick21 @Tamasg Ah gotcha! Yeah if you are using the voice commands you have to start with "look" or something to get it to take the picture, which it automatically describes, before you can ask for more specifics. But you can bypass this by taking the photo with the camera button, then asking your question. It should answer directly. Sometimes the answer is nonresponsive though, E.G> "I can't read the label in this picture"...

@FreakyFwoof Yeah I messed with the boze frames a bit, these sound better. Not anything I'd replace my headphones with but for what they are it's quite decent.

MetaAI goes multimodal on ray bands! People in the US and Canada can now ask the AI to describe pictures taken by the glasses camera. You can also send video from the glasses to WhatsApp or messenger calls! https://about.fb.com/news/2024/04/new-ray-ban-meta-smart-glasses-styles-and-meta-ai-updates/
