This poll is almost over - we're at 964 responses, enough to have be at least an interesting sample...

@yetiinabox @quixoticgeek always wanted one.. but never did. Had NeXTStep x86 running on a machine for a while though and I've still got the cd and box. Somewhere. Will have to try to find it. I recall it was a pain to get going with its very limited/restricted specific hardware requirements.

@yetiinabox @quixoticgeek One of my colleagues used to have a whole classroom full of them, but it wasn't long before they were all in storage.

@yetiinabox @quixoticgeek The average number of NeXT computers per respondant seems to be about .1

@yetiinabox @quixoticgeek Technically, yes, but I lent it to a friend on the Apple QA team when they were trying to get tests running for this new OS they were building on top of the NeXT OS core and didn't yet have enough native next-gen Apple hardware, and I never got around to asking for it back.

@yetiinabox @quixoticgeek what is a 'NeXT' computer?
-
@pgreer@genomic.social 2026-01-25 16:57
@yetiinabox @quixoticgeek Adding myself to the "used to own one" group. Specifically a NextStation along with an SGI O2 and an ultrasparc Ultra 5.

@yetiinabox @quixoticgeek Let me preempt future polls by noting that I do not own a NeXT computer, I do not own a Betamax video, a Palm Pilot, a Jaz (or Zip) drive, a laserdisc player, an Apple Newton, a Zune, any kind of pager or fax machine, a Handspring Visor or a rotary phone...

@yetiinabox I *wish*. Always wanted one, wanted NextStep when that ran on PCs but couldn’t afford it. These days I just dream.

@yetiinabox @quixoticgeek I used a NeXT workstation at uni for a couple of weeks in the late 1990s.

@yetiinabox @quixoticgeek Don't own a NeXT and wouldn't want to have one. The only NeXT aspect of interest to me is the OS and software. There is no need to bother with slow old hardware thanks to #previous I own a HP 715/64 runnning its PA-RISC NeXTSTEP 3.3 version, though. Nonetheless, it's never used for anything and i would rather sell it to someone offering a generous amount of cash for it. Got OPENSTEP installed on an old 15" Thinkpad T60 with a gorgeous UXGA screen and just love it.

@yetiinabox @quixoticgeek I did! For a long time! But alas no longer. Had a NeXTstation on my desk for a good number of years from...2000 to 2004 or so.

@yetiinabox @quixoticgeek sadly, I don't own a NeXT computer, but I do at least have a next step 3.3 box set, the cubic version.

@yetiinabox @quixoticgeek @prufrax Don’t own a NeXT but I did admin a couple back in the 90s as part of our very heterogenous UNIX network! I _think_ it was the only system we had that didn’t have the uname command.

@jyrgenn@mas.to 2026-01-30 10:25
@yetiinabox @quixoticgeek In the 90s I borrowed a cube with '040 from a friend and wrote large parts of my diploma (Masters eqv.) thesis on it. That was a gorgeous machine. I loved that greyscale monitor, so crisp.

@rrustema@mastodon.social 2026-01-31 09:53
@yetiinabox @quixoticgeek In the 2000s I was hired by a telecom company and heard that had a dozen or more Next-computers stored, out of use. I hooked them up with a befriended collector and he managed to save them all and load them in his red Citroën BX Break. Cubes, slaps, monitors, all in perfect condition. Over the years all the machines have found their way to a computer museum, hacker space or to other collectors (through marktplaats.nl).

@kaleissin@wandering.shop 2026-02-01 14:17
@quixoticgeek @yetiinabox I had access to one at the uni computer club (that place collected anything that could be on the internet with coax) but it was sloooow. I used Window Maker for a long time though, miss the way it laid out menus.
