  In 50 years of microwave use I had not seen a failure like this. The turntable or keypad fail at some point. It is scary because, while it may be a form of safety glass, the cracking has gone all the way through the inner layer and very small glass fragments are flaking into the microwave. Unsafe to use even if the EMF shielding is intact, which I am unsure of and can't measure. If cracking went from the upper-right of the photo as seems plausible, it still does not explain how the crack...

  Tonight I came up with a fabulous Idea for measuring how smart "AI" has gotten: hand management of the circular "AI" funding mechanism over to the "AI"s themselves! If they are as smart as all that, they should be able to manage Complex Financing Mechanisms much better than run-of-the-mill Wall Street grifters!

  I must congratulate the git designers for allowing a combination of options and attributes which, once a branch update is pulled from upstream, places the branch in a state from which I can neither commit the suddenly-offending though untouched files, nor switch branches to get away from them. TL;DR EOL platform differences suck. Why ca\n't we all just get along?

  QEMU + virt-manager was a bit painful to setup, but that done, significantly better than Virtual Box which is infinitely better than VMware. All this so I can check out books from the LAPL, and perhaps run some tax software once/year.

  All my life I was fascinated with space and loved NASA. The Orange Blight has destroyed that. I could not give less of a flying fsck what happens with Artemis, because NASA is now run by Nazis. (One could reasonably say that NASA was run by Nazis early on with von Braun, as well, of course.)

  Is refusing to shake hands across an open door a Canadian superstition, a finance industry superstition, or something broader I've never heard of before? Because the landlord sent an Canadian friend to inspect some water damage today, and that's the first thing he did on arrival. Naturally I did not actually invite him in, just backed off from the door to see if he could enter freely and of his own will.

  Electricity is starting to become "too cheap to meter," as breathless nuclear fans predicted back in the 1950s. At certain times of day in very sunny environments, like Australia and California. But the power is coming via solar panels from the big fusion reactor in the sky, rather than nasty uranium fission plants being used to boil water to drive turbines. The part not too cheap to meter will remain transmission, given power company tendencies to burn down forests and towns...

  @cstross@wandering.shop Lawn darts. 1 HP/over melee weapons capable of removing eyes, puncturing holes in torsos, etc. when used as directed. The idea was, put down a plastic hoop and throw the darts high into the air with the intent of sticking in the ground inside the hoop. The reality was that when children throw things in the air, they come down randomly. It was the 1960s. They were banned in an early triumph of the US consumer products safety commission so I expect them back on the market...
